+1 to the above, forgot that you should be showing a slow increase in NiTRATES..

So I waited the 24 hours after dosing with 1 ppm ammonia in my 20 gallon long, all three parameters were at zero before and after 24 hours the ammo, nitrites and nitrates are still at zero. But, it I understood correctly, after 24 hours I should have seen a slight increase in nitrAtes ? I didn't. Next step please.

Please review the fishless cycle sticky to be sure you have followed all the steps necessary:

Also, I did not catch in this thread until now that you stated that you are using "household ammonia"...I believe you are supposed to use PURE ammonia, which may be different than HH ammonia, which could contain dyes, perfumes, etc...these extra ingredients may affect your cycle, will need an expert to confirm this though

Well, I don't know if my opinion qualifies, but I know the ammonia used should not contain surfactants. I would make sure it's pure ammonia. If not, I'd be doing lots of water changes to get the contaminated ammonia out and pure ammonia in.
When in doubt, do a water change.

    "This ain't rocket science!"

Taurus, you have reputation beyond repute...of course your opinion qualifies...and thumbs up to your suggestion, totally forgot about surfactants...I think water changes are the right way to go, following Lady Hobb's sticky, with pure ammonia

I did the test where you shake it and if it foams it has detergents, surfacants, etc. in it. It did not foam.

If you are certain you are using pure ammonia, I would continue with daily dosing/API testing until you begin to show a slight increase in nitrates...be sure you clean nothing, especially your filter and media, so that your BB (beneficial bacteria) can grow...

What kind of de-chlorinator are you using?

    From the sticky:

"There are several reasons that a fishless cycle may fail.
    1/ Not using a de-chlorinator
2/ Not reducing the amount of ammonia during the nitrite stage.
3/ Changing your filter media or cleaning the gravel or adding chemicals that you donít need to add.
4/ Not having the patience to wait for the nitrite levels to drop.
5/ Over-dosing ammonia by starting with too much or adding more than once a day.

You should be able to achieve a fishless cycle in 3 weeks or less. Not everyone has the same results in cycling. Water temperature, oxygen, hardness and softness of each persons water makes cycling all a bit different for each of us. Do not get frustrated or think you have done something wrong if your cycle does not go exactly as another persons cycle went for them."
