It is ok but you get a lot more evaporation.

Yup, more evaporation. And depending, you might get a little leak out the back of the filter housing - had that happen once.

Some filters run quieter without their covers. For instance, the cov of an aquaclear acts like a resonance chamber and projects filter noises out forwards. However, without covers you also get splashing and evaporation like mentioned before.

If it's a noise issue, try finding or buying an old mouse pad and cutting little strips out of it. Rest the lid on the strips and the vibration noise goes away.

not because of the noise, i bought a used aquaclear 30 without a cover.
evaporation is ok because i don't mind topping off the water

Wouldn't think it would be an issue as long as you keep an eye out for contaminates. I went without a cover on mine to keep down the noise and then I found car hair floating in my tank.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.
