if you can't afford more items inside the tank, just sit something up outside of the tank that could be a point of distraction for him. I think it was Tiara here who suggested that. a pringles can, a potted plant, sometimes I prop a stuffed toy (borrowed from the dog) near the tank. something colorful that might interest him. make sure, however, that if he flares at it repeatedly, to take it away as it's irritating him rather than entertaining him.
and good for you for getting him into the 5 gal.

+ 1 to the above post. And don't forget to replace the item every few days to keep it from getting boring.

other things to keep him busy could be a cheap dollar piece of 2" wide pvc cave, or a small plant pot, and my local dollar store sells some nice fake plants lol. other things that are free, take a walk with some white vinegar and pick out some nice looking rocks, put some vinegar on it and if nothing happens its most likely safe for the tank. river rocks might be good to as they are smooth. im sure there are other things you might be able to think of.... just giving you some penny pinching ideas

edit: to you question about size, he looks like a vail tail betta (cheapest and most common) so the 5g should be fine as long as he is solo, if you want to add another fish or something then look into at least the 10g.

edit2: about your question on the stress coat +, i wouldnt doubt it would help him a little by preventing infection. but betta fix could help that too. but that needs to be dosed carefully so you dont suffocate the betta. good water conditions and stable ones would do just that too.

Here are the promised photos! Also a bonus of my brother's female vailtail betta in her "moonrock" cave! It was too cute to not show off!

You can see the purple thing on top of the tank, that's the hood from the 1gal with the light in it. I also have a purple folder to the right of the tank to keep my computer screen from messing with him.The heater didn't turn on at all today because it was around 90 degrees (f) here... And it keeps the tank at a minimum of 76 degrees (f). The betta hammock is attached to the side near the folder and is about half-way down (its hidden by the thermometer and ammonia alert). It says to keep it near the surface, but he likes it lower than that, so... I catered to his preference.

Now, here is my brother's female. She has a habit of skipping and jumping on the surface of her tank, so she has a bump on her head where she collided with her filter... She hasn't done it since, but still has the bump... I had my brother change a little of her diet, since she was only getting pellets, and she's been behaving better. I'm still a little concerned about that bump tho... Will it heal and go away, or will she have it forever?

Observer of: Shy Zoro the ghost shrimp, 13 neon tetras whom we cannot tell apart, one Gold Mystery Snail named Blaze (cuz he'd win any race), a delta tail blue betta male (Train), female betta (named Missy), a bristle nose Pleco (Play), as well as 3 cats, and a school of dogs.

dose that hood have one of those incandescent bulbs in it? if so i would try to keep the light off when the hear is high. those lights put off 95% heat.

he wont mind the lower light for a while, tbh it usually helps keep the fish calm. his fins dont too look bad, but he does look like he flared at your camera

He's looking good. His fins should heal without much of a problem as long as the water is kept clean, though when ripped fins regrow sometimes they grow back a different color than they started. I had one blue betta with a red spot on his tail who ripped his tail to shreds, and it grew back purple.

XD In that third picture he definitely fluffed up at you... I think that's betta-speak for "enough with the camera!"

The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of the act

Yup it was me! Betta enrichment is what it's called, some need loads of entertainment. Put bizarre objects for an hour or so a day next to his tank, to keep him occupied. Some even like TV if their tank is in view of it.

Make sure to get silk plants only, as plastic will tear up the fins on a "whipper". I wouldn't double the stress coat, I'm not a huge fan of that stuff myself as it can often leave a "milky" sort of film in the tank. I would suggest a pinch of aquarium salt, dissolved in tank water, added to his tank. The salt will help heal and keep infection or fungus from setting in. Don't use a full dose of aquarium salt, many Betta really don't like that at all, so just a pinch.

If the tips turn red, and look "bloody" on the ends, then you have fin rot setting in. If so, make sure to get an appropriate fin rot medication.
2 10 gallon tanks, 1 20 gallon tank, 1 Fluval Edge, 1 29 gallon tank, and one backyard pond.
