here is my 5.5gal set up if you want some ideas...that's a crypt on the right toward the rear...two plants to the left there, i forget what they are. if someone could ID them for me, i'd appreciate it. whatever they are my betta absolutely loves to rest on them. if i had a 10gal i would plant a whole bunch of those...this tank has the betta, 5 glolights, an photo.jpgafrican dwarf frog, and about 6-8 ghost shrimp.
20gal: 18 neon tetra, ghost shrimp
    5.5gal: 5 glolight tetra

That front plant on the left definitely looks like Hygrophila Stricta to me. A very pretty plant that's relatively hardy. I've got some in 3 of my tanks.

thanks kevin! looked up some pics and i concur. i trim the bottoms regularly to get it to stalk up and grow wider at the top to make it extra betta friendly!

one more question is is better to use a Sand as a top layer? or just normal gravel? or just pure plant substrate for them? because my betta in his 5 gallon loves to lay on the bottom so i was wondering if sand might be better hmmm?

My wife's Betta actually really enjoys hanging out on java moss. The tank has no substrate just a small piece of slate the java is tied to with fishing line. This tank is easy to clean and I trim the java monthly.
I have had red cherry shrimp in the tank with the Betta and he nipped a few right off the bat but the shrimp got wise and hid in the java moss.
Just a different type of plant to consider.
Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

i have a low-tech planted set up in here with the betta, glolights and shrimp - so these plants don't need much - but i use planting substrate with gravel on top and the betta is fine with it and so are the plants

i don't like planting substrate by itself because it kicks up a lot of dust. the gravel helps keep it down even if some gets mixed up with it while doing gravel vacuumingphoto 1.jpg

yeah i didn`t think pure substrate would be good my original plan was substrate with gravel on top like my main tank is. just was curious on sand cause like i said he likes laying around n he tends to rip his fins

i been trying to find a 10-20 gallon tank at resale places for him n garage sales but no luck yet.
