You could also use use powder form of Rid-x septic waste treatment to help reduce the mulm build-up.

Rid-X and Septo-Bac are both proving safe and beneficial for fw aquariums. the best method seems to dissolve the powder in tank water then dump in the tank while keeping out the 'chunky' residue.

    I'll put it bluntly:

Septic tanks are installed on nearly every property/near it.
A septic tank handles the waste you give it via the toilet.

in said septic tank, they use products called 'Rid X' to help deal with your waste.

it's been researched/explored to use the same bacteria in aquariums to help with fish waste.

the article linked says it's been pretty much proven fact if you use an all natural enzyme/bacteria to help with fish waste, such as Rid X, then you will have cleaner filters in the long run.

Seeing this thread, i'm potentially going to explore this addition to my FW set up.

But how will it effect the plants?

    Will they starve for food?

Will it take the place of the stuff already doing the work?

Will dosing of dry ferts have an effect on this stuff.

I mean I am open to new ways, but has there been any long term tries with Rid-X to say look after 5 years all is good?

as far as I know, it's pretty new and hasn't been tested on planted tanks yet to my knowledge. I'll be keeping up with the original thread to see what develops. so far it looks pretty promising with good results so far.
