Question FX5+ All Other Hardware Mulm Build up

    0 Not allowed!
I dont know what im doing wrong but im not sure why my equiptment has so much mulm build up i guess thats what im going to call it. I was doing filter maintenence today opend my FX5 and heres a pic of what my sponges looked like also the biomax was filthy also.

I gave both of my filter a deep cleaning today and changed all my filter floss aswell and the same thing with my AC110 and my UV Sterilizer pump. Why am i having such a buld up? i clean my filters like every 2-3 months. Dont worry about me cleaning my fliters at the same time i only have my Fx5 loaded with bio max to the max and my AC110 is just strictly mechanical housing sponges filter floss and chemi pure elite. But back to the issue is there something im doing wrong because im sure my filters are not supposed to be this filthy.

Weren't you over feeding your fish? Some fish are just messy, like some of those cichlids you have. I don't think it is necessarily anything you are doing wrong, but because your tank is heavily stocked with African cichlids. All that mulm in the filters might be the cause of your high nitrates. Some of us can get away with little filter maintenance, and some of us can't. You and I seem to be those who need to clean the filters more often than others.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

I'm in that boat of needing to do maintenance on my filters about every 2 months vs waiting longer.

My fish are happy and healthy. I have good param's. so its outside of my control. Just part of how our tanks are set up.

Every tank is different, even if the size and fish are similar.

+1 Honey Badger, they are all unique, and required maintenance will vary from time to time, I've found I cant say my filters need maintenance every x weeks or months, they need it when the flow slows or they're not appearing as efficient as usual

there is a new method aquarists are doing to cut down on all that 'mulm'. using the same principal and materials as a septic tank. "Rid-X", and "Septo-Bac" are two products that use an all natural pro-biotic way to use a helpful bacteria to break it all down. the pro-biotic bacteria also out-competes other bad bacteria which is supposed to keep the tank healthier. recent trials suggest this is a great way to keep your system optimal. I have a heavy bioload and I am keeping up with current trials.

Do you have a pre-filter sponge on the FX5 intake? Seems like you need on the AC100 intake as well.

It's basically a "sponge filter" that is attached to the intake line of your FX5.

so instead of the plastic cap, you put the "pre filter sponge" on it.
