Sorry to hear about the bad news. Stuff like that is never easy to deal with

I have always wanted to do a shrimp tank with lots of moss and driftwood in a 10 gallon.

I think the shell dwellers are great idea for the 29 as well
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

i like the Betta idea too.
the only dwarf gourmai i can think of that can go in a 10 is a honey gourmai.
even that would be crowded for a gourmai.
i would either go with a betta or a small group of neon's
    sorry about your dog

A small group of Neons is just fine 1n a 10 gal tank -

My stocking in a 10 gal is a Betta, 4 Neons, 4 Ember Tetras, & 6 Rasboras - with 50% weekly wcs, and all doing just fine for many months.
    Here's the tank:

im not sure if we are going with the neons or not, she will decide when she is ready.

@cliff, ye those tanks are sweet set ups, wouldnt be as cool if i already have one :P battling a darned ramhorn snail infestation ATM..... GRRRR i hate snails.

it will most likely be a species only tank, regardless of the stock.

So sorry about the dog. We've been through that too often and it's never easy.
I agree with those who've posted that neons and a betta would be gorgeous in a 10 gallon and as long as you have plenty of plants or driftwood for them to swim in and around they will be happy and active.
I have a crown tail betta with neons and its a great mix all around.
Love steeler's idea of green neons as well.

My nearest fish store (Petsmart) is 1 hour one-way and it's the ONLY one within that distance. I always grumble about having to drive that far, too, but on a nice summer day it's a piece of cake, really. Just a nice drive and a chance to go to lunch somewhere different. My biggest gripe is I usually drive there and they don't have anything I went there for and then have to drive another hour to get home.

When they have what I want, it's a short trip but if they don't have what I want, it's a long trip. LOLOL
I think the 10 gallon with neons is just fine and you really don't need anything but some java moss in it if you wanted to stay simple.

You could also do a dozen ember tetras or a dozen galaxy rasboras along with 6 dwarf cories (e.g hasbrosus)

+ 1 to SueD's suggetion of Ember tetras, still a fairly new fish but tough and outgoing for being so small.

Now that would look real sharp - agree.

i have a 5.5 gallon with a crowntail betta, 5 glolight tetra, an african dwarf frog, and about 8-10 ghost shrimp. a hidey hole and three plants. complete peace. normal behavior. great water parameters with large weekly water changes. very happy with it. i back a betta with a school of tetra. doesn't ALWAYS work out, but i took the risk and am very happy with this tank.

wow thats a heavy stocked 5.5g tank.... i wouldnt mind doing a betta + speices, but the small chance of betta gone rouge is detering me completely, plus im one of the people who think betta are best suited alone. maybe with some company in larger tanks but 10g i think is kinda cramped for that. might end up with betta and neons if she wants to, but it will be a female and she will be stocked last. this tank will be completely up to her call and will be completely done with only supervisions from me.

custome DYI leds, lower light, hour long sunrise/set with 6 hrs on time and dimm any time lighting. might have a custom made canister filter. small heater rated for 20g tanks, driftwood, rock, and low light plants. im dying to set this up but then again its going to be her tank with help from me lol.....
