My original idea was to paint the bottom of my new tank with a "sand like substrate", although this may still be possible if it's not I'm considering using a thin layer (1 to 1-1/2") of sand. Since this will be a Discus community tank I will need to keep the substrate extremely clean so I will need a sand substrate that can be easily vacuumed (nothing will be planted into the substrate). I saw something on line called Aqua Quartz sand that looked pretty nice. Does anyone have any experience with this or other suggestions?

Do you want to keep black? I like this diamond grinding sand. Its also 8 bucks.

I wouldn't paint the bottom of the tank unless you painted it black on the outside. A gritty paint sounds hard to clean to me. Sandz had a good idea with the blasting sand.

I've heard from several users that they like Aqua Quartz.
Also, pool filter sand is a good substrate for a discus tank. That's all I ever use, and it's great.

I wasn't going black at all on the substrate, I like the look of a natural or off white color more. Sandz, I googled "diamond grinding sand" but not coming up with sand...just grinding tools lol!!

Great I was thinking either the Aqua Quartz or like you said pool filter sand. I found this link online about the blasting sand and like the look of the large grain a lot.

BRAIN FART! Forgive me im totally multitasking my brain right now. If you just want the offwhite look, the PFS is your best bet. You can sometimes even get white sand.

LOL, Sandz you totally crack me up, I think I'm gonna pick up some PFS if the other options don't work out.

PFS does the job for me, purely simple and affordable.
