I checked my water parameters tonight on my 20 gallon and. after getting readings of 4 ppm of ammo., because I didn't know I didn't need that much. my ammo. is ZERO. ,At first the API Kit showed the water clear then yellow
. I am just stunned ! My nitrites are still 10 + and nitrates 40. I dosed the tank up to about 2 ppm ammo now. When it comes time for a water change to bring the nitrates down. how much of a water change? Thanks

With nitrites at 10ppm you still have quite a way to go but when the time comes you can change out 100% of the water if you want. There is not enough, if any bacteria in the water to worry about.
People say if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all... Then they wonder why am I so quiet.
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
A moderator on a fish forum should be able to identify an oscar... Don't you think?

We did an 80% water change which brought the nitrates down from over 100ppm to basically unreadable levels.

Were your nitrites down to 0 yet before you changed the water?

The only point of the water change when doing a fishless cycle is to bring the nitrates down to a safe level for the purpose of putting fish in there - I am assuming that your nitrites had fallen to 0 by now.
