  1. Default Hi all, Cichlid Newbie!

Hi everyone, our journey with fish began about 6 weeks ago. Our eldest daughter brought home a small tank of Albino Convicts, about 25 to 30 of them, and then neglected to look after them. A convict apocalypse ensued before we had any idea that she had not been looking after them, and by the time we discovered them there was one Albino left. We immediately confiscated it, naming it Chuck Norris as it was the sole survivor, and our journey began. We cleaned the tank and all the equipment, then felt sorry for poor Chuck, so we decided to get him some new friends. We opted to get just two fish as we have no experience and obviously a lot to learn, and were advised at our local pet shop to go for Firemouth Cichlids. So home we came with Scarlet (who has a very red underside), and Rhett (which seemed right alongside little Scarlet). We had a small mishap with the little tank, it clouded up really badly, so we opted to get a new tank and decorations. The old tank had no lid, no light, and (we later discovered) a filter that was too small and inadequate for the tank. So we set up the new tank, filter, and everything else, and popped the fish in. They love it, we're almost two weeks into the move, and so far so good. We have so far discovered that Chuck is a girl and is a bit mad, Scarlet is very shy and slower growing, and Rhett is a bit of a casanova. As for us, we have a lot of research to do, but your site seems extremely helpful. :)

Read up on cycling the tank. It seems as though the tank wasn't cycled which can lead to a ton of problems.

Those firemouths will eventually outgrow that 25g tank though. So be prepared to re-home them or purchase a larger tank. If the firemouths breed, chuck could be in trouble. Others will have some more input, but I highly recommend you look into how to cycle the tank and be sure to do so

welcome to the forum, and hope you are ready, because once you start this hobby it becomes addicting lol

Is this a 25 gallon? For a convict? I wouldn't want to keep an adult convict in anything less than 3 ft wide I think.

Welcome to the AC. I want t know much more about this set up. First before you get to into it, take an hour or so and read the E-Book that is free here. Its linked on the left hand side of the forum. I think you have some major challenges. One you could have two male fire mouths. They will be aggressive to each other in small confines. Second, how big of a tank do you have? Lets start here and please read about cycling and consider the return of the fire mouths until we fully can assess and plan out this situation.

+ to Sandz. In the meantime, though, while you're figuring this out, make sure you have a good water conditioner (such as Seachams Prime or Tetra Safe Start) and start making regular water changes. Most likely, ammonia and nitrites are going to start to build up. To keep on top of them, you should be changing about 50% of the water every day or every other day.
If you do only that while you read up on cycling, you'll be ahead of the game.
    Good luck

The tank is 125 litre, and the firemouths get along fine, from what I have so far read and seen one is definitely female and the other male.

In that case, congratulations! You'll soon have the pitter patter of small fins and you'll soon be the proud owner of two separate aquariums!
