Return lines can be run almost any way you want. Running them over the top can reduce the flow tho.If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Understandable. After looking into the idea of a plywood sump I think just using a 75/90g tank would be cheaper and much easier. Therefore would need to located a bit different. Just a ball park, assuming 1" drain lines (2 per 30g tank) and a return line of 1" or 1-1/2" would something like a mag7 work? Max lift of the water would be like 8' with only 2 bends (straight up, 90, then another 90 down into tanks)
