I, too, was brand new at learning about aquarium tanks, fish, and learning about proper care of all of them...the folks here have helped me greatly, and their patience is outstanding, if you follow their directions and ask the right questions...don't worry if you think you have "dumb" questions, the only "dumb" questions are the ones that go un-asked and un-answered, IMO...

    If interested, here's my story:

So were most of us when we joined : )As such, I don't have what would probably be considered the proper tools... such as the basics to test water parameters Most of us here use the API freshwater liquid test kit - it contains everything you could need to test your water parameters, a water siphon to change your water and clean your substrate (either sand or gravel most of the time), a thermometer if you don't already have one. A heater, enough filtration for double the size of your tank - in your case for at least 100gal if the tank is 50 gal. Water conditioner like Seachem's Prime - very economical.. Something I intend to remedy, as a priority. Once I get my test kit, I'll be sure to post the parameters. When I say I'm a "n00b", I mean that I'm greener than the Crayola crayon, by the same name (maybe even greener than the algae, in question). - LOL As for the filter, it came with the kit (tank, heater, filter, lid, and light bulb).
With a larger tank, you will be able to put much more than a group of danios in there. As stated above, you will read about cycling, stock with compatible fish, test your water, do regular water changes, clean your filter periodically and you're good to go!

If you do decide to use the larger tank (which is to your advantage), you can use the 5gal for a quarantine tank - a place to keep new fish for a few weeks to make sure they don't become ill, start eating and just adjust to being moved from the store to your home - that will involve keeping a smaller filter in the 50gal tank all the time to use just for quarantining.
46 gal fw tank with black skirt tetras, neon tetras, spotted corys, cherry barbs, otoclinus, snails & 4 amano shrimp - plastic & live plants
    5 gal QT
Remember: Our job is to take care of the water our fish live in

Thanks, Slaphppy7 - I'll have to give it a read. Having only a month under my belt, I have a LOT to learn. There are a lot of sites, around, but this one really seemed to have some good advice, which prompted me to register. I'm looking forward to going from couldn't-be-greener to actually being able to hand out some sound advice, one of these years... :)

Welcome yo the AC! This is THE place to be for those new to fishkeeping. I also never had an aquarium and when I started my research last August, I found this forum to be the best. If you listen to the advice given here, you will be successful.

I was going to start with a 29 gallon tank, but after reading the posts here, I decided on a 55, then finally a 75 gal. Very glad I did - I now understand why a larger tank is much easier to keep healthy.

Your 50 gal is a great tank size to start with. Read the sticky on fishless cycling. Search thru the posts for those on new tank set-up. Read all the posts you can - you'll be amazed at what you will learn. There are selections to be made for filtration, heaters, plants, decor, what fish to stock, etc. The forum will help you make the right decisions. Good luck!
My 75 gal Journal & My Dual 29 gal Journal
My 75 gal - Gold Pristella Tetras, Scissortail Rasboras, Neon Dwarf Rainbowfish, Longfin and Regular Fin Zebra Danios
My Dual 29 gals - Left Tank - Diamond Tetras, Amano Shrimp, BNP. Right Tank (still cycling) - Amano Shrimp, Black Neon Tetras

Imma24 - Ah, good. I was kind of throwing around what to do with the 5-gal tank. Keeping it as an adjustment/quarantine tank is a good plan... and it'll be nice to keep it around and give the small tank a place in a larger setup.

5g is a nice quarantine for smaller fish.

While you are cycling the 50 gallon, go here http://aqadvisor.com/ and plan out a stocking list. Also remember to double the filtration. You want to get either a single filter rated at 100 gallons or 2 filters rated at 50 gallons a piece. Most owners here prefer two filters in case you have problems with one you have a backup.

Be aware that AA is a useful as a sketchpad - but it is not a tool for final drafts.

Use it to build a framework that you then finesse.
    Gas mileage isn't everything OIIIIIIIO
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.
