Default (Warning: Possibly Stupid Question :P) HOB Filtration

    0 Not allowed!
Once again, possibly stupid question: What differentiates a 10gal HOB filter vs 40gal HOB filter? Other than the obvious, size and price. Does one use more power than the other? If so, could you switch out the 40gal hob filter power source and insert into a 10gal hob filter, would that make the 10gal hob filter into a 40gal hob filter? Please bare with my noobness! Just curious of how it works. And most people on here are more experienced than ppl at petstores. so that's why i'm asking. Once again, Thank you!

May good fish keeping be ever in your favor :P

It is the capacity for holding the beneficial bacteria as well as the flow that matters so to answer your question: No that would not be the upgrade you are thinking of.

You would increase it's flow rate but not it's capacity for holding beneficial bacteria [& you would need more bacteria to handle the bio-load in a larger tank]

Another relevant point is that filters are generally good for approximately HALF their rating meaning that a filter rated for "up to 40G" is actually only adequate for a 20 tank.

This is due to the wonderful manufacturer trick of testing their filters under laboratory condition's with no media in them [No EFFECTIVE filter in the real world runs this way]

SO.. Once you add filter media {The flow slows & that media immediately starts clogging - The flow slows even further] you end up with a filter that is running at roughly half the rated capacity.

    Hope this helps.
    Gas mileage isn't everything OIIIIIIIO
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.
