  1. Default The ammonia reads yellow.....

    0 Not allowed!
according to my API ammonia (only) test kit and although I know the Tetra test strips are apparently worthless, its all I can afford right now and they are reading zero on nitrites and 40-60 ppm on nitrates. I am thinking i am at the end of the cycle and happy days are here again. i am also a little leery because this is only about day 10 and I did this without an aquarium heater, just at room temperature. Is the next step a water change and if so, how much ? Thank you

You already know the test strips can be unreliable so unless you used seeded media from a different filter in the filter for this tank I would be careful, 10 days seems a bit quick.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

what would you suggest I do then-buy the full API Master Test Kit and start the cycle over ?

good god no, no need to start over just because things look to be going too well!
Your LFS should be able to test your water for you and confirm your readings if you bring them a sample.
They generally do it for free, tho ours charges $2 now.

Did I say or suggest anything about starting over? Just buy a better test kit.

ive had my api test kit for 1.5 yrs....(and still have over half left)

test strips only lasted maybe a month. its magnitudes cheaper for the api master test kit.

  7. Default continuation/update of the "ammonia reads yellow thread"

    0 Not allowed!
I am continuing to feed the aquarium bacteria 2 ppm ammonia as I am doing a fishless cycle. everytime I test the ammonia later on it reads yellow-great. I respect your advice to take a sample of my aquarium water to my LFS to be tested, however, I know they use the same Tetra Easy Strips that I have been using for nitrites and nitrates. since my nitrites are at zero and my nitrates at between 40 and 60, although I will still go to the fish store to compare readings, after for example a 75 % water change for nitrate reduction, can I put fish in ? Thanks.

I would definately invest in the full API test kit...although due to my circumstances I had to cycle "with fish", and it took me a month to fully cycle, I would not have been as confident that I was fully cycled without the full liquid test kit...I would not feel comfortable thinking that your "nitrites are at zero" if all you are using is the test strips...

+1 to above. getting the API test kit was one of the best moves i ever made. strips...are...not...accurate. plain and simple. the kit is more money to spend in one shot, but you will get way more tests out of it!
