Over 50 people still missing and those EMT's and firemen dead. Awful. Darned good thing the explosion was after school because it was leveled. Poor people.

I agree Lady Hobbs. What a mess that explosion made of the small town and it's residence. I couldn't image what those fighting the fire felt when it happened.
Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

Please remember; every keystroke has a consequence.

It's been a horrible few days for a lot of people - and the horror will continue for some time for those injured and left behind. Just tragic.

Would be nice if they learned from this disaster though.

Yes. They interviewed some people working at fertilizer plants up here...apparently ours are supposedly all isolated...away from towns, etc., just in case. Explosions are a known hazard...

It doesn't change anything for these poor people of course...but the folks who do planning really need to stay on top of things...

I live in an industrial city with many factories located all north of town and houses nearby. Industrial accidents happen unfortunately but something was definitely malfunctioning there. Something was wrong that ammonia was able to build up like that and I hope they can find out what happened and restore their town and lives. I'm sure the fire chief feels just awful he sent those firemen in there. That would be very hard to live with.

I wonder. Those guys know that that can happen when they sign up for the job. I hope some local politicians feel awful that they let a factory like this with a very shabby safety record operate.

Oh, to listen to the young'ens going on with this on the internet, they have all the answers and know all about it. Just as they have all the answers for what transpired in Boston. This factory was issued a fine in 2006 due to some containers not properly marked. In 2011 they filed paperwork that all was well and they were having no issues. I also heard they had a fire on Wednesday that may have rekindled that caused this. But this will be determined by those who do the inspections.

Also many complaints that this factory was built in a town near other buildings when in fact the factory was built first and the town grew up around it, as is common across the country. Unfortunately in our world, accidents happen, trains derail, buildings blow up, bridges fall down and people die. Not always are they someones fault.

It is true that sometimes 'life' just happens. I agree with you on that point! :D

We had a fireworks storage facilty that was right in the middle of a neighbourhood . After that blew up in 2000 health and safety and zoning issues suddenly got the attention they deserved. That incident leveled 100 acres of city, killed "only" 23 people .

It always takes one disaster for people to take safety seriously.

If I read this it seems to be that they had significantly more material in stock than they were supposed to have. In any case, if you have 240 tons of ammonium nitrate in stock you know that if something goes wrong the results will be quite spectacular. I must admit, I do admire the guts of the firefighters who went in on that knowing full well (at least I certainly assume so) that there was more than 200 tons of highly volatile material stored there.
