Is this a high fin L200 or a regular, this is the only picture I have as I don't have it yet(picking it up saturday). Also if you can tell is it male or female?

There is no high fin variety. What there is is two almost identical species both labeled L200. To tell them apart you'd need a shot with the dorsal fin extended. I suspect this is Hemiancistrus subviridis. Sexing hemis is not easy, and especially will help. Judging from this picture it's either female or an immature male or a bad picture.

It is about 6 inches long, if that helps at all.

Not really, only in that it's a semi adult. I'd guess female but I could be wrong.

If this is your first fish, does it really matter? Are you intend to start breeding these?

No, I am not planning on breeding them I was just interested.

Ah, ok. Shame, this is one of those difficult species.

I'd advice you to sign up for an account on planetcatfish as well. Low traffic forum but some real experts there.

I may try to breed them but not likely anytime soon, some of the fish in my tank are still babies, once they grow up and pair up then I may start looking for a male L200.

    I got a better picture with the fin up:Screen shot 2013-04-22 at 12.25.33 PM.jpg
So does it look more like Baryancistrus demantoides or Hemiancistrus subviridis. The color is a little washed out and splotchy because he/she was just put into my tank.

Bigger file size would have made it easier. I'd say Hemiancistrus subviridis because the dorsal fin is not corrected to the rest. Lovely fish, I'm a bit envious to be honest.

Thanks! It is my favorite fish I own and I have only had her for a couple of days. She looks even better now that she has colored up.
