Thread: Carbon n Ph?

  1. Default Carbon n Ph?

just a question can carbon in ur filter cause ur ph to go up? i just happened to come across an artical saying that carbon raises ph? my filters can only have active cabon filter thingies in them so should i be looking into a new filter? my GH is 35.8 from what this chart says and KH is 214.8 my ph was 8.2 i added ph into a little filter baggie n shoved it into my filter n its at about 7.8-8 now i just added it so im watching to see if it drops lower but just wondering about that should i start looking into a new filter for my 56 gallon like a canister one? or should i just work with my 2 hob ones?

Also if i should look into a new filter i buy from petsmarts or Amazon whichever i can find cheaper can u give me some links into new filters?

This is the filters i use btw i have 2 of them on back of my tank:

i don't know if carbon alters ph but you don't have to change your filter. just because your filters have slots for carbon doesn't mean you can't put other media in those slots. so no need to change your filter. carbon isn't good at housing bacteria so change one at a time with bio-max. don't change all at once because you will completly lose your cycle. change one, wait 3 weeks and change another. that what i would do put it is your call. hopefully someone can help you further

Carbon dioxide, not carbon filter pads can raise Ph as the carbon dioxide is released from the water through aeration. e.g, water that may start as 7.5 can raise to 8.4 etc.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

A warm beer is better than a cold beer. Because nothing is better than a cold beer, and a warm beer is better than nothing.

The lower your GH & KH get is the more unstable your pH will get unless the new water coming in will have the same parameters.

Hence the pH shifts you are experiencing.

its not really shifting thought from the tap it is 7.5ph but i checked water in tank it was 8.2ph (after i cycled) i added Peat bag and 2inches of distilled water to hope to fix this it went down to around 7.8-8 now

Peat bag is peat for a canister filter in a little Aquarium filter bag.

( Goes to 11!)Also i said that wrong i ment i added peat into a little bag. i typed ph instead for some reason.

its just getting frustrateing because everything im trying to lower ph isn`t working should i just stop tryingt o get it lower n just work with what i have? or should i look into n Ro unit instead of useing Distilled?

i think i`ll try adding 5 gallons of store water which is around 6.5-6.6 ph and 1 distilled which is around 6ph when i do my 15% water change on monday maybe that will start helping it slowly along with the peat moss i have in there im hopeing i can get it down to 6.5ish
