Default Decided to build my own canister filter.

I just ordered an 8 gallon food grade drum with a lid and a locking ring from Ebay.
I was looking at pond filters and decided that I was going to just DIY it. I am just trying to decide if I should set it up like a Phosban reactor (run a tube from the lid to the bottom, inside) or if I should set it up by just running the inlet straight into the bottom and put the return in the lid. Now I am going to buy the PVC fittings and tubing/pipes and materials for trays. This should be a fun project, I will take photos of the steps I took and post them for comments.

Looks like the kind of project I would do also.

Just looking at the bottome of the container, I would consider going in and out of the lid. Just looking at the flat area, the bulk-head fittings would probably seal beter in the lid.

There are a few vids on youtube using PVC pipes to make DIY canister filters and because of the diferant shape, you can go in the bottom and out the top witch is a little simpler in my opinion. But either way is feasable as long as you make sure that the water flow is spread evenly across the filter media and not going around it.

Good luck, and cant wait to see your progress.

Going through the top is the way I was leaning towards also for the same reasons you mentioned. I plan on making a shelf in the bottom to create a space for the water to fill the bottom entirely. Then (bottom to top) would come the bio media, then filter pads, then floss, then the layers of chem media. The 8 gallon drum should give me tons of room to work with. Cant wait for it to arrive, 10 minutes after it gets here- it's time for surgery! For the price this container seemed to be a no brainer.

I am not a DIY'er but your project reminded me of this one. It might not be exactly what you are thinking of doing, but it might help you with your design,
People say if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all... Then they wonder why am I so quiet.
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
A moderator on a fish forum should be able to identify an oscar... Don't you think?

That's some good looking out, HB1. Thanx for the link, I already saw one idea in it that I think I'm going to use, lol (credit to Aeon).
