  1. Default 55 Gallon Tank - Two AquaClear 30's good enough?

    0 Not allowed!
The AquaClear 30 is rated up to 30 gallon aquariums and up to 150 GPH. Looking at canister filters some are rated for 55 gallon aquariums and are 150 GPH. I would think two AC30's would be a the minimum a 55 gallon tank would need, one placed on each end. I am trying to find a good setup for about 50$ and this seems to be the best solution. The tank will be planted as well so that is the extra filtration needed to be "over the top" as a lot of people do. Would the above work?

    try looking online for filtration.

"over the top" that we recommend means getting filtration rated at 110gallons for your tank...so take a look at an ac110.

    or two ac70's.

my 45gallon tank has 4 filters on it-canister, 2 hobs and a sponge filter.

    +1 to the above advice

Two HOB filters or a HOB and canister filter would be better. I used to have a fluval 405 and AC70 on my planted 55 gallon tank and that combo worked out great. Two AC70s would also work very well.

You should not really plan for your plants to process the ammonia and nitrites in your water. It would be best to have proper filtration on a aquarium and allow your plants to use up the nitrates and phosphates in the water

If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

    Welcome to the forum

I run an AC30 on one of my 10 gallon quarantine tanks. I don't think 2 are up for the job of a 55 gallon, but it really depends on how you intend to stock the tank. I had 2 canisters on my 55, each one capable of filtering the tank on their own. THAT is "over the top" ;) But, I ask more of my filtration systems than simply providing clean water.

One thing I want to point out - An HOB gallon per hour and a canister gallon per hour are NOT equal. Canisters hold such a significantly larger amount of media that they don't need such a high turnover rate - they can process a larger amount of ammonia in one pass through the filter. HOBs, on the other hand, need a high turnover rate to keep the ammonia concentration entering the filter as low as possible. So, an HOB that does 150 GPH is no where near as effective as a canister that does 150 GPH. On a side note, you must have looked at an eheim as your canister reference - they have the lowest turnover rates of all canisters.
