Rummy Nose's should be able to adapt to the higher temp range. They are listed as one of the choice fish to keep with Discus and Cardinals on most sites and books.

I've never kept Discus but of course I have Rummy noses and Cardinals together.

Glad to see your doing your reasearch.

Ok, so after doing tons of reading over the weekend, I updated my spreadsheet at work today (please don't mind the caps, we use them with our software at work and I just carried it over).
The tank is looking like this:

135 gallon with 39 gallon sump (lots of bio max), no carbon ever. Is ChemiPure Elite ok?
    Discus - 7-8 (3" size)
Cardinal Tetras, thinking like 20 (not sure of quantity yet)
Rummy Nose Tetra, thinking like 20 (not sure of quantity yet)
    Sterbai Cory - 12
    Otocinclus vestitus - 7
Heaters - 2 of the appropriate size
Aged Water - heated & aerated
Lighting - have to work that out yet..will need for low light plants, and want that blue light thingy (senior moment, excuse me here)
Separate accessories - bucket, nets, sponges, water changer....
    QT - 30 gallon
Medications - read all the stickys, will stock appropriately
**Sandz thanks for the link to simplydiscus.com, have read a ton of info there for beginners in regard to Discus. Also some great articles on wetspottropical fish.com

So, below are some of the things I'm considering/have questions about:

IF I DECIDE TO GO BARE BOTTOM, WILL THE TETRAS, RAMS AND CORYS BE COMFORTABLE IN A BARE BOTTOM TANK? I DON'T THINK THE TETRAS WOULD CARE BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RAMS & CORYS?

BOTTOM OF TANK: CAN I PAINT IT BLACK TO SHOW OFF THE COLORS OF THE OTHER COMMUNITY FISH? I WILL NOT INCLUDE ANY OF THE DISCUS THAT "PEPPER" IF SO.

MANZANITA WOOD: USE THIS TO ATTACH JAVA FERNS AND ANUBIAS, LIKE TREE ROOTS GROWING BELOW THE WATERLINE. HANGING MANZANITA/DRIFTWOOD ATTACHED TO A CROSS PIECE

PLANTS: JAVA FERN & ANUBIUS ATTACHED TO WOOD. BOLBITIS (TALLER GROWING) ATTACHED TO WOOD OR ROCK NEAR BOTTOM OF TANK

AMAZON SWORDS: CAN BE PLANTED IN A CLAY POT, I WOULD JUST NEED TO CHANGE THE EXTERIOR OF THE POT, I DON'T LIKE THE LOOK OF THE POT…NOT VERY "NATURAL". MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A ROCK PLANTER. SOUNDS WEIRD BUT LOOKS GOOD IN MY HEAD...SERIOUSLY, IT DOES :D

ROCK CAVES: FOR RAMS (SILICONE TOGETHER) SO THEY'RE EASY TO MOVE FOR CLEANING AND THEY DON'T FALL ON A FISH :(.

I READ THAT ROCKS SHOULD NOT BE USED IN A DISCUS TANK IN THE EVENT THEY SHOULD STARTLE. IF THAT'S SO, HOW DO YOU STOP THEM FROM HITTING OFF THE BOTTOM OF BARE TANK? MAYBE I CAN ATTACH PLANTS LIKE RICCIA TO THE TOP OF THE ROCK CAVES WITH A NYLON HAIRNET? THE CAVES WON'T BE VERY HIGH SO HOPEFULLY I WOULDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT COVERING THE SIDES. LOL, I'LL JUST BUBBLE WRAP ANYTHING THAT LOOKS DANGEROUS!!!

POSSIBLE OPTION - LARGE GRAIN WHITE SAND LESS THAN 1" THICK LAYER

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE SIZE OF THIS "LARGE GRAIN" SAND THAT CAN BE VACCED AND NOT SUCKED UP LIKE OTHER SANDS?

IF I USE THIS "LARGE GRAIN" SAND DO I STILL NEED TO HAVE MALAYSIAN TRUMPET SNAILS? CAN YOU HAVE SNAILS WITH DISCUS? IF NOT, CAN I JUST AERATE MY SAND BY COMBING IT?

I know the above is a lot of "stuff" but I find that writing it down then working it out really helps with the outcome. Any of your advice, experience, opinions are welcome. I'm now going to have a glass of wine and breathe....

Just another Cory to pitch to you; False Adolfo Cory (Corydoras duplicareus). They are not as expensive as adolfoi Cories but are just as attractive. You might have a hard time finding them however.

Rummy Nose Tetra, thinking like 20 (not sure of quantity yet) Good for their size
    Sterbai Cory - 12 12-15 is perfect
Otocinclus vestitus - 7 Only if you want these fish. They are not required by a long shot.
Heaters - 2 of the appropriate size two 300 watt
Aged Water - heated & aerated
Lighting - have to work that out yet..will need for low light plants, and want that blue light thingy (senior moment, excuse me here) You could get by with the same set up I have, 2 bulb aqualife t5ho

    YES

MANZANITA WOOD: USE THIS TO ATTACH JAVA FERNS AND ANUBIAS, LIKE TREE ROOTS GROWING BELOW THE WATERLINE. HANGING MANZANITA/DRIFTWOOD ATTACHED TO A CROSS PIECE

    GOOD IDEA.

SOUNDS WEIRD BUT LOOKS GOOD IN MY HEAD...SERIOUSLY, IT DOES :D

tHIS CAN BE DONE BY TAKING BLACK SAND AND COATING A POT IN SILICONE AND ROLLING IT IN SAND

IF THAT'S SO, HOW DO YOU STOP THEM FROM HITTING OFF THE BOTTOM OF BARE TANK? jUST AVOID SHARP EDGES, EVERYTHING ELSE IS FINE. DISCUS SPOOK BUT THEY WILL BE FINE AS LONG AS YOU DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO CUT THEM.

POSSIBLE OPTION - LARGE GRAIN WHITE SAND LESS THAN 1" THICK LAYER

NOT MANDITORY FOR SNAILS BUT WILL NOT HURT DISCUS. JUST MAKE SURE THAT IF ONE DIES IT IS TAKEN OUT IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE THEY CAN FOUL WATER.
I know the above is a lot of "stuff" but I find that writing it down then working it out really helps with the outcome. Any of your advice, experience, opinions are welcome. I'm now going to have a glass of wine and breathe....
You did some great research. I still maintain its 100% possible to do a planted tank but its up to you for easy use. I am planning a large 180 right now with no substrate but lots of wood and attached plants so hopefully I wont miss the sand. You could do a whole lot of things with this tank.

steeler1, thank you...I didn't do "all" the research when I started my first tank, I've learned so much from the members here and the I know the most valuable thing you can have in your arsenal when it comes to fish keeping is knowledge and good advice from the people who have "been there, done that".

on a lighter note, you're seriously killing me with the above video of the False Adolfo Cory, just beeeeutiful!!!!! I will seriously try to find these.

Sandz, you totally rock!!! If I can work out the image of a bare bottom tank I think I'm going to go that route, just to make my life a little easier in regard to my first Discus/community tank. I love the Discus but didn't want the rest of the family to suffer. I think it's workable just needs a bit more planning but I have ideas racing through my mind at the speed of light.

If I can get more info on the large grain sand I could be swayed, I love the sight of corys sifting over the sand and well, just the imagery of sand...the first picture I have ever taken of a vacation that included sand was one with my toes in it. Of course this also included a bottle of Corona or a lovely snifter of tequila...but I digress

A lot of the videos I have looked at have Siamese Algae Eaters, is there a particular reason for this (other than the obvious) when it comes to Discus?
