So I haven't logged in like forever but that's because I've been in trapped in Discus hell. I apparantly have every discus breeders dream in my tank, 3 pairs of discus that are laying eggs like crazy. The problem with that is 2 of the pairs are extremely territorial and aggressive. One of my Penang Equptions was so bullied that she stopped eating and hid in a corner next to the overflow. This then led to stringy poo so I placed her in a quarantine and treated with Metro. This fish is still in QT and is dark in color but no clampled fins or cloudy eyes and after about 3 weeks finally just started to nibble at some frozen bloodworms. I then sectioned off part of the tank with eggrate and rounded up the two most aggressive into their own little honeymoon suite.

Last week I noticed my big sweet ARSG (albino red spotted green) was being bullied by my other aggressive pair and again...the white stringy poo. I set up a 20 gallon qt for him but he did not take well to the additional stress of the move and within two days died. I was heart broken, I am still distraught over the whole situation. I set up another section of eggcrate in the tank and hustled that pair into their own area.

This is not what I thought my tank would be, a barren space sectioned off with eggcrate in an attempt to keep my fish safe and healthy. I spoke to my provider Kenny (Kenny's Discus) and was told this is common, possibly to add more discus to keep their attention on accessing food instead of such a comfortable environment for breeding. If I was sure of this I would do so in a heartbeat but fear I could just be subjecting more fish to a possibly stressful environment. My head hurts from thinking about it.

I've had suggestions of moving the pairs to separate breeding tanks but really don't want 3 or more 29 gallon tanks plus the 135 gallon and a 45 gallon community tank. I also don't want to then if I have fry take on the responsiblity (it's a large one) of attempting to raise the fry (maybe if I were retired or didn't have to work 2 jobs for a living). I also couldn't let them have fry then cull them either, way sentimental for that process.

I've actually considered selling the discus but am so attached to them I could not let them go to anyone who could not give them the best possible care. So that's where I'm at right now, stuck between a rock and a hard place so they say.

I'm so very sorry for the loss of your boy and that things aren't what you thought they would be. Unfortunately it sounds like your tank is "too successful".

I almost gave you a thumbs up, because I can sympathize with you. I feel like you're me 3-6 months ago, when I had my 2nd child. lol The idea of fish was grating on my nerves at that point, despite them not actually being the cause of my stress. Unfortunately, it seems like the fish your stressors. lol

I'm sorry you seem to be having such a difficult time with your Discus and I'm very sorry for the loss of your ARSG. That's very sad news.

I know you're about ready to hang it up, but you've gone through such lengths to create this beautiful tank. You have 1,967 +1 posts in your journal to prove it. Just take a step back, take a deep breath and rethink what you could do. Mature Discus aggression seems to be the problem. They're ready to mate (and some are) and they're becoming more territorial. The more aggressive couples are taking it out on the lesser aggressors. SO... how do they handle this in nature? The weaker fish runs and hides, then seeks out an appropriate mate. Unfortunately, they don't have the gallons to make a big run for it, so how do we curtail this in an aquarium?

You could try creating a more densely planted environment, to create breaks in the tank. That'll give your discus hide-outs and time to forget why they're pissed. You could try some tall Sword plants and create some bushy stem forests.

Just my 2 cents... Hope you can stave off the aggression through some means soon! We're here if you need us!

Glad to hear from you Judi but so sorry you're having this kind of trouble. I think Kevin makes some good suggestions. I'd even go as far as to get some tall artificial plants in there right now - you can always remove them once your new plants (if you decide to plant them) mature. Anything to break the sight lines.
Another options, as Kenny said, would be to get more discus to spread out the aggression. Any chance of splitting up the males and females and putting the smaller numbers in the 40 qt? I'm sure your a bit desperate to find a solution - I would be too - and hope something works out soon.
So sorry that you lost your pretty boy. Fingers crossed that things will settle down. soon.
