Ah I'm so glad you're going with a refugium, I probably missed that you mentioned it before.

Not including one on my tank is one of my biggest regrets with it.

What plants, mud and light are you using in it?

Hey mojo, I'm going to do watersprite since it grows like crazy (low light 24/7) and I'm going with Miracle Mud 2 that Sandz suggested. I'm looking forward to the plumbing challenge!

I would be careful using miracle mud. If you are talking about the same product that I am thinking of, it is mud taken from some deeper areas of the ocean. Typically, most substrates from the ocean work best in Marine set-ups. When used in FW they can raise your dissolved mineral content which can effect your pH, very similar to crushed coral that way. I don't know if this would happen or not, but if I was you, I would look into it just to be safe

Maybe some good quality plant substrate would be better ?
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I've read a lot about using just plan dirt. For some people its to dirty for moving plants around but since you won't be doing that it wouldn't be a big deal. Make sure you get organic then cap it with the same amount of sand, gravel, etc... Its cheep and easy.

Miracle Mud 2 was designed especially for freshwater refugiums but like Cliff said, about 80% of it comes from deep ocean mud. I would research more on it's pH buffering/altering characteristics first and even call them and confirm.

I could see why you would choose the miracle mud over traditional dirted substrate but as I've never used the product personally I can't vouch or account for it's effects, reviews seem positive tho.

Cliff, I did email Leng Sy at Eco system aquarium with my plan for a discus community tank and parameters of 7.3 ph & 3 kh. He responded if i wanted to lower my ph to 6.6 or 6.8 to use Seachem ph down in the beginning but if i'm not there would not be an increase in ph with MM2 for freshwater.
He was also very firm about healthy discus requiring 6.0-6.8. I'm not planning on lowering my ph but really appreciate the advise going further than my original question.
