Well its now been 4 days since their arrival in their new tank and I have yet to see any of my apistos eat. They're still very skinny but they still seem sort of active however they like to spend the majority of their time in their clay pot caves. Due to this issue I've ordered brine shrimp eggs to start my own hatchery and hatch them live food and just now I put a large, 6 gallon bucket full of water, some leaves, and a few twigs, under a tree in my backyard so I can get some mosquitos breeding and see if my apistos will accept mosquito larvae.

Just wondering is their any other live foods that are easy to breed or buy online cheap that are quite small and can be fed to cichlid fry(my cichlids aren't fry, their juveniles, but their so tiny that they might as well be fry.) Also what is the nutritional value of mosquito larvae?? I don't really want to feed them something that won't really help them.

Nothing. Literally. The only LFS that are worth my time are the big box stores like Petco or Petsmart and they don't carry live food. I've tried frozen but they ignore it. They've never been fed food that wasn't live and their so young and so skinny that I can't continue to try getting them to eat pellets or frozen food..

The only good store I know is called Tropiquarium. I just emailed them asking if they sell live food, if so I could probably go tonight. I really don't know what to do. My brine shrimp eggs won't be here until the 16th at the latest, 11th at the earliest. And even if I do get them on the 11th it'll still take me a day or two to hatch the shrimp.

I think you could send an email to the seller and ask for his advice. Tell him what you have tried so far. He may have an idea that would help.

I have :/ They only thing he told me was that he fed them live brine shrimp their whole lives, along with hikari something or other for when they were very tiny. He was a great seller, packaged his fish well, and emailed me back promptly, but with advice he was sort of useless.

Yeah, I said previously that they don't like frozen. I've tried frozen bloodworm but lacked movement of something living so they didn't go actively for it. If it floated by their face they thought it was living and went for it, and liked it, but the food rarely floated by their face perfectly..

After better inspection one of my females seems to be quite chunky which is odd as she was the female that I thought I was going to lose as she had torn fins and bad color. Maybe she's pecking food from the gravel late at night?? Either way they need live food.. I emailed two stores, hopefully they email me by tomorrow afternoon. I really need something.

Apisto's love mosquito larvae and Grindal worms, you can culture the worms easily just paste the name into google, they are regarded as a fatty food so moderation may need to be applied. A friend of mine has 4 Apisto's in a tank and thats what he likes to feed them although his will also eat flake and frozen. Hope this helps

thanks so much. Its been really nice here lately, in the low 80's today actually. We're supposed to get a storm tomorrow, then more warm weather. So hopefully some rain water in my bucket outside and some warm weather can provoke the mosquitoes into breeding. I know they're around, I've been seeing them everywhere. So hopefully they start soon.

Ok trying to get into specifics on feeding. Are you familiar with spot feeding? Where you let you frozen brine shrimp melt in tank water, suck them up with a medicine dropper and squirt them in the tank near the fish? You may get more food results this way.
