Are you referring to something you put over your filter intake?

Am I the only person who has never heard this term? LOL

imma24, a filter sock is just that, materiel sown together is a sock like shape which provide mechanical filtration. They are fairly common to find used in sumps on marine set-up to provide mechanical filtration on the water entering the sump from the tank.

How often you would need to clean / rotate them would really depend on your set-up and the thickness of your material (ie..... 100 micron, 300 micron.....)

I use 100 micron socks and they last me about 5 to 6 days. I always make sure the top of the sock is much lower than the top of the sump so nothing back can happen if they become plugged. I always wash mine by hand in RO water.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I don't use filter socks anymore. I used them when I first started running a sump, but got sick of changing them out every few days, so I stopped using them and didn't notice any difference in water quality from when I was using them.

When I did use them I changed them out once the water started running over the top of them instead of through it, which was usually after 2 or 3 days
