I started to question that after finding the "Binford 9000" of filters

If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

There's a certain kind of fishkeeper who will always be attracted to "binford 9000" of equipment.

This looks big but for a pond filter it's not that big. And consider how sumps can be easilt 25% of tank volume. Get one of these: http://solentplastics.co.uk/Harcostar%20group%202.jpg and built a binford yourself?

I'm always fascinated by filters that make a FX5 look like it belongs on a nano tank

It is kind of small for a pond. I've made bucket and barrel filters that were larger.

A dozen of those would still be inadequate for some of the "tanks" (more like rooms) I've seen at monsterfishkeepers lol.

To the origional question... I think the time you over filter the tank is when you create so much current or suction that your fish and plants cant thrive is when you overfilter.

Also, if you have a softy reef tank, using one of those with media that completely remove phosphate, nitrate and organics would probably inhibit/slow coral growth as they prefer dirtier water. Those same conditions would be great for an SPS tank though.

Not necessarily. The current from flow is just one side effect of certain types of filtration and even those can be mitigated.

Sure they can, but thats what im saying... 5 million gallons per hour on a 10 gallon tank would be overfiltering ney? So I restate *though its a bit over the top* that the point where your fish cant thrive due to suction/current in the tank.
