Hi guys, I've purchased my little brother a small tank for him to start off with, hes only seven so I didn't want to start him off with a bigger more expensive tank, in case he loses interest. Its about a 5 gallon tank and I'm just wondering what anyone can suggest as the best fish to stock the tank with? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

shrimp, snails, croaking gourami, or betta(of course not all together).
be sure to look up the size and care requirements of all of your stock
as well as cycle the tank.

Gourami or betta for sure. Though due to the size of the tank, snails may not survive in it as they are more sensitive to water readings.

20 gal tall - Helios - HM Betta Male (obtained around 03/2016), 1 zebra nerite, 8-10 cherry shrimp, 1-2 amano shrimp, Java Moss and crypto planted tank w/ Driftwood and Spider Wood

Thanks guys! Just out of curiosity how well do you think guppies would do and how many? I've never cared for guppies before so I don't have any experience with them.

They are pretty small but they are more active than the gouramis. Males will bicker and chase each other around, as well as chase the females whenever they aren't chasing another male or begging for food. There fore they may need a bit more room than a five gallon.

I think a group of endlers would look good in a 5g tank with a marimo ball or java moss.

I think a croaking gourami gets up to 3 inches making it too large for a 5 gallon tank. A sparkling gourami, at 1.5 inches, would be a good choice for a 5g. Endlers might look good in a 5 gallon but need a longer tank because of their high activity level. A 5 gallon tank doesn't have enough room for most of the fish available really. You could get the sparkling gourami, or a betta, or do the shrimp/snail set up someone else suggested.

Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

Gouramis like cover especially in small tanks. Shrimps require a fishkeeper who knows what he's doing.

I'd say get a pair of endlers of the same sex.

There is no reason the OP can't put adequate cover in the tank. Knowing what you are doing just takes a bit of research. Seriouslyfish, TropicalFishKeeping, Fishlore, and Badmans's Tropical Fish all give at least a 10 gallon as the minimum tank size for endlers livebearers.
