    Default controlling water pump output?

If I needed to turn down the output of a water pump, would it be feasible to use a router speed controller to alter the electricity that the motor uses and therefore the flow? Or do you think it would cause pump failure? Kind of a random "what if" question.

What kind of water pump is it? What are you trying to do with it? Can you diffuse it instead?

    ^ Key questions

Along the same line of thought as possibly diffusing it's output is limiting it's input [To a point, IE: With a sponge pre-filter] which will work also.
Obviously the feasibility of these ideas all depend on the needs of your application.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

They are submersible 792 GPH pumps that are going to used in my filtration setup. They are going to be hiding behind an enormous chunk of wood inside the tank and the water will be piped down to the canister and then back up to an overhead tank where the heaters will live. The return to the display will be gravity return via a 1.5" standpipe. If the water comes ripping back into the overhead I would like to turn it down some. Although I imagine that I could just put an elbow on the return and run a spraybar. I just don't want to put too much back pressure on the pumps by restricting the flow with smaller diameter tubing. (going to be using 3/4"). I am guessing that I will be right around 730 gph on the return after the reductions for head and elbows in the plumbing.

Quick question: Why not just use a sump? [Pumping INTO a canister as opposed to it being gravity siphon fed is a possible issue IMO]
Since you have another tank you could easily make it a sump and your plumbing becomes simpler with one less thing out of the loop..

You may have other issues going on,, But just something that occurred to me.

You do not want to reduce the input too much or cavitation can occur and you'll burn out the pump

When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

i can think of several ways to reduce the motors flow with electronics but i dont know how comfortable you are with that stuff lol. the rotor speed controll is nothing more than a variable resistor. you can solder one of those into the power cable and use that to reduce the speed, sure, but i think diverting the flow would be your best bet...

LOL, Honey Badger. Thanx I needed a good chuckle.
I live in a 2nd floor apartment so I am concerned with overflow issues, using a stand pipe in an overhead will drastically reduce the odds of any of that, I am sure that my neighbor will be happy to hear that I am trying to prevent his need for a wet suit. And there is always the fact that I am a hopeless tinkerer and I like trying out of the ordinary things. Clearly it may not seem logical, but I want to do something that no one I know has. I'm just strange I suppose.
