I don't use pre-filters so I am not sure what is available. I do know many people use AC sponges cut to fit for pre-filters, and yes they go on the in-take of the filter. You can use any old piece of sponge, but be certain it is clean.
If it's called tourist season why can't I shoot them?
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

I clean my filters every 2 weeks and check the motor to see if it needs cleaning. Motor is cleaned at least once a month. Clean sponges create good flow.

Thanks gronlaura, I think I need to do the same...you don't disassemble the motor, you just remove it from the filter housing and clean the exterior of it, correct?

You twist the motor 45 degrees and remove it. Remove the impeller for cleaning and use a soft brush to clean where the impeller goes, then rinse with water. Be sure to wet the o-ring seal with water prior to re-installing the motor. Make sure it is properly & tightly screwed back into the housing. Takes about 2 minutes.

Got the AC30 cleaned and put back in, runs just fine, better water flow with the sponge being clean (duh)...Spongebob house and glow cave thingy out, river rocks in...We like it, and the fish seem to also...snails are ALL OVER the rocks, all the time...

Dang, need to trim some of those yellow leaves off the plant on the right, didn't notice 'til now...thinking of getting rid of those 2 plants anyway, and either putting in java fern or some nice fake plants...will need something for the shrimp to hide in, when we finally get them

I'm still liking the tank. A few java ferns and some crypts would look nice in there.

the tank does look good. Perfect for a little girl!

as to prefilter sponges - they're great but make certain you get one that's not so dense that it makes the filter work harder and obstructs the water flow. I used a prefilter sponge on my ac for a while that was so dense, the sides of the sponge sucked in to the intake tube (think of an hour glass shape) and interfered with the water flow into the filter which consequently reduced it's functionality.

Thanks HB1, it's nothing fancy but we like it too..my main thing is to keep it healthy and happy for the fish...good practice tank for maybe something bigger in the future..

Can you trust java plants bought from just any LFS to be healthy and pest free?...they have to be tied down to keep from floating around, correct?...I would not be against fake plants too, but if live ones help benefit the ecosystem in such a small tank, I'd rather do that...that dark fern-type plant on the left, whatever it is, keeps uprooting during water changes, and it doesn't look like it's flourishing to me..I've never tried to tie it down or anything....the other one isn't much better, but it at least seems rooted...
