For a nice tight fit and to control evaporation, match the top to your tank.
    Thank you, good info....I think we are going to stick with LED for now, so can any of you suggest some plants, floating or otherwise, that don't require a lot of bright light to grow and flourish?....thanks in advance for reading and replies

    I would recommend trying java fern first. Then based on how it does it will give you a good idea of what other plants may do well in your tank lighting. You can buy it at almost any store that sells fish (even petco and petsmart) just not walmart.
    You don't bury java fern in your substrate you use a fine thread to tie it to a rock, driftwood, or other decoration.

    Here's a sticky on good beginner plants.

    Water test before water change:

    Ammonia = 0
    Nitrate = 10
    Nitrite = 2.0

    I don't think that dang nitrite level will EVER go down!

    Hi everyone, MILESTONE reached today, imo...

    Ammonia = 0
    Nitrate = 10
    Nitrite = 1

    The first time the nitrite has been below 2, FINALLY....

    I'm excited...a case study in "cycling with fish"...only 2 fish in my instance, Platty and Mollie, and 2 snails, but it has been fun to witness...3 WEEKS of 50-70 percent water changes DAILY..I started on the 3rd of April....thanks to Hardy for recommending the Python, if only for a 10 gallon tank...it makes the water change a snap, and well worth the price, as far as I'm concerned...

    We added a new decoration/bubbler, see here: http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...AvailInUS%2FNo

    It's really pretty cool, daughter picked it out, the fish are warming up to it, but the air pump from Petco only has one setting of air volume...HIGH...and the bubbling action is kinda noisy and rough...already have another air pump ordered and on the way...

    May be buying some new fish soon!...almost there!

    Yay! It takes forever for the nitrites to start falling, but once they finally start they will go fairly quickly.
    When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
    Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
    I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
    Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

    I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

    Good to know that, thanks HB1...the two remaining fish are from the ORIGINAL set my daughter bought with the "kit" tank...they were thrown into the tank the first day it was filled with water....they've been through this whole process...hardy couple of fish, I presume...

    Will post back tomorrow...

    Ciao....
