I recently got a aquaclear 50 love the thing easy to clean / do maintenance on when you need like every month or so. most people here feel carbon is only handy for removing meds after treating a tank. So people replace that stage with either more mechanical or biological filtration. when you get the new filter in, you can stick your old sponge in between one of the stages to save all beneficial bacteria you grew in the old filter on the sponge. i went with 1 extra stage of biomax where the chemical filtration normally goes. i may add some filter floss between the two bags of biomax for extra filtration in the future next time i do a filter cleaning. as you can see in the picture of it you have lots of room for custom filter media options. i am not super experienced with this but i am sure other people here could make suggestions on filter media or you can check out some other threads on the forum here. oh one last thing carbon after a month or so needs to be replaced which is another reason people don't use it. once your completely cycled a weekly partial water change will be enough. biomax pretty much never goes bad seen people using the same stuff for like 10 years can just use some old tank water on it to rinse it a bit when you need to during a partial water change. same with the sponge you can can just squeeze (gently) it out. that filter maintenance wouldn't need to be preformed until you were finished cycling completely
Thanks for replying with alot of good info!

Here is what we are currently using: http://www.amazon.com/Tetra-26169-Wh.../dp/B0006JM09E

I can take the contents from one of these "packs" and use it in the new filter to keep the bacterial growth going?

To be honest, I've never even touched one of these "bio-bags", my wife has changed them out....too frequently, now I know...

My 2 cents on this. Get the AC30 instead of the 20.

My rule of thumb is the largest filter you can afford to add to your tank that doesn't buffet your fish around like a whirlwind.
I have an AC30 on my 10 gallon and I have been exceedingly happy with it. And no need to restart your cycle just because you get a new filter. Simply move your media over to the new filter and Viola!

Thanks for your input, CL....let me check out the price difference...

BTW, my daughter just got home and commented on how clear the water was...I told her we're getting there, but the process is just starting...we're going to have fun with it regardless...

"molly" & "platy" are hanging in there...those 2 have survived some harsh times here..:)

My only concern now is the physical dimensions...The tank we have now has a cover that the current filter fits through, so that you can close the cover around the protruding filter...the hole in the cover is about 2" x 6 1/2"...will this filter (or the 20 gal one) fit through this opening?

The existing filter has extra room around the opening as it is now...

I just measured my AC30. It is exactly 6 inches wide so that would leave you about .25 of an inch on either side. Only a small lip of the filter actually goes in the tank, so width should be the only measurement that matters.

Thanks CL for doing that for me...going to get one of those AC30's ordered now...my wife and me were talking about it, and she asked how much of the original kit my daughter bought would still be in use when all is said and done...my reply was "the glass tank"...

Yeah it seems like that's always the way. I inherited my tank from someone who was not caring for it properly. I went out and upgraded all the things I needed and in the end realized the same thing. The only thing that is still the same from the person who gave it to me is the glass.

Save that other equipment though. It will be great for your 5 gallon beta tank that you get next month.

LOL...that's your prediction, huh?...you're probably right...or, I could use the equipment for a "quarantine tank", no?

Sure, you could run the original filter in your current tank along with the new filter (if that's possible) - once it's cycled, all you have to do to use it for a quarantine tank is put it on the smaller tank and presto! Then after quarantine (or hospital tank for that matter), you just move the filter back to the larger tank to keep it cycled.

I run a small filter good for 10gal on my main tank and transfer it over to my 5gal when I get new fish.

Yes a quarantine is a great application for that equipment.
Also, if you don't have room to run both filters at once, you can pack extra media into that big ol' ac 30, then when you can just move a sponge over from the 30 to the QT tank when the time comes to get new fish.
So assure your wife your money on the kit was not a waste :)
