    Default Appisto Diet??

With my pair of Appistogramma trifasciata shipping here tomorrow, I'm curious as to what food I should buy for them. I've read online that they enjoy live or frozen foods such as artemia, daphnia, moina, blood worms, and pellet foods. What I'm wondering is what pellet food would be best for them? Does anyone have any recommendations?? I shop for food and supplies at my local Petco so I'm not sure if they carry live foods like blood worms. But I know they definitely carry frozen.. I still need a good pellet food though, they're mostly carnivorous and feed on benthic invertebrates in nature.

Best in food is subjective... and you've probably not gotten a reply because at times there are people that get rather passionate about their opinion of the best. What is important is what is in the pellets, not the brand on the label. You want to see things like Whole FISHTYPE or FISHTYPE fishmeal not just generic fish meal. (Krill, Salmon, Herring etc) Generic fish meal is more along the line of hot dog quality meats, whereas the specific fish is using more of the side of steak quality.

I've heard good things about the following brands:
    New Life Spectrum
    Omega One
    Hikari

Alright thank you for this :D I'll be sure to search around when I go shopping. I've already watched videos talking about protein and fats and other important nutrients in foods so I'll be sure to check that the food has good levels of the essentials. I'm going to try for live bloodworms or something but if not I'll definitely get some sort of frozen food.

Apistos are ferocious mid-level hunters. If it's smallish and wiggles it's food. They do get some vegetable matter though from grazing in and on algae.

http://nlsfishfood.com/images/images/cichlid.png might be a good food to start them on. Once they've grown a bit I'd give hikari cichlid gold a try.

Once summer reaches new Jersey, leaf some water out and start your own mosquito larvae breeding project, most fish love these.

Couldn't that be bad in my area? O.o I live in a densely populated area of Nj, could the mosquito larvae carry polutants?? And thankyou for the recommendation. I'll be sure to buy that when I go to the store. The apistos are still young. The pair I'm getting won't be much longer than an inch.

Would have to be very bad before I'd avoid mosquito larvae. Are we talking Beijing style conditions?

Oh nooo nothing that bad. But I was just being cautious.. I live right on the edge of a river, actually there's about only 30 ft of flat land outside my house and then there's a 30 foot cliff down that leads onto a marshland that's adjacent to the river. So there are ALWAYS mosquitoes outside my house. I've actually seen the first few spring mosquitoes the past few days. When it gets warm I'll put a bucket of water outside for them and see if any show up. Could the mosquito larvae harm my fish or Nerite snails???

Over here the only thing I need to watch out for is damselfly and dragonfly larvae. I net the mosquito larvae when they're at the surface to breath, something with damselfly never does. I then tip in the catch in a white plastic container to inspect it.

I've also find that the larvae grow better if you chuck in a hand or two of garden dirt.

Alrighty :D how do you distinguish damselfly and dragonfly larvae from mosquito larvae?? I don't think it'll be a big issue as I never seem to see many damselflies or dragonflies in my area, plus even when I do I don't see them until mid summer. I just want to be cautious. We're supposed to be getting nice weather the next few days so hopefully I can get some larvae soon :D My apistos shipped yesterday, according to tracking they should be here on Saturday. Hopefully they arrive safely.

EDIT: after a bit of google searching I think I'll be fine, I rarely see those kinds of larvae here, and when I do its in larger streams and rivers so I think I'll be safe c:

I think so too. The difference is really quite easy. There's some good material on wikipedia on mosquito larvae. Anything that doesn't match that doesn't go in, it's that simple.
