But when it is wrong it is wrong. Fish need plenty of room to swim and schooling fish need groups to thrive, tell me how that is wrong information.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

By that logic we should tell the people coming in here who want to keep arowanas in 50 gallon tanks that it's perfectly fine since its their opinion.

A 10 gallon is ok for a group of neons because it is 20 inches long so the fish have adequate room to swim and there is enough volume for a small school so the fish will thrive. My opinion is a 20g should be the minimum for neons because it is 30 inches long and the fish have more room to swim and you can add more numbers for the schooling fish to thrive. That is different and neither is necessarily wrong.
A 5 gallon only gives enough volume for 4-5 neons, not a school in my opinion considering these fish group by the hundreds or thousands naturally, and only 16 inches across a 5g does not give a fish that is 1.5 inches long nearly enough room to swim.
The OP has made the decision to go with the bigger tank and I commend him on his decision.

Sure it's fine if it's a juvenile arowana as long as the keeper understands that the arowana will need to be moved to a larger tank when necessary. I think the OP understands that.

And we're talking about neons, not arowanas. I do not disagree that a 10, 20, 20 long would be better for a school of neons. But a 5 gallon tank is fine for 4-5 neons.

When in doubt, do a water change.

Really Taurus? What happened to stock the tank you have and not the tank you might get?

Honestly, I have never seen any reputable source of information recommend anything less than ten gallons for a school of neons.

But neons are not fine in groups of 4-5.

Seriously - this has become ridiculous. I soooo regret the firestorm I created when I suggested putting neons in a 5 gallon tank. I suspect the OP is wondering, what the heck is going on.

Bottom line: The OP asked for guidance. Guidance was given – some of which some AC members disagreed with– specifically my contention that neons could be kept in a 5 gallon tank. I contended (and still do) that yes, they can if care is taken but bowed to those more experienced then me, agreeing that yes, the better option would be a larger tank. Since the OP had indicated funds were an issue as was a bonding experience with his stepdaughter, I suggested he could make due with a 5 gallon tank as I have had success with neons in a smaller tank, keep his neons and add a few more to the mix if need be – while also restating that, as had been pointed out, a larger tank would be desirable. It seems like a workable solution - because we were NOT talking arowanas.

It should have ended there but instead it turned in to an ‘editorial’ by some AC members who felt it necessary to ONCE again restate their opinion with emphasis AND go as far as to demand a video to prove that 6 neons would be ‘happy’ in a 5 gallon tank. Seriously? I thought the intent of the AC was to share and learn not to incite. Everyone’s experiences are different and all are entitled to share them – at least that’s the way it used to be. I’m sorry to leave but I’m done with this pettiness. Hold the applause.

To the OP – you are a wise man to listen to good advice. I wish you much luck with your tank and please do not assume this petty bickering is the status quo on the forum. There is much good advice to be had here and much knowledge to gain.

Ok, there is no need for all the drama to get taken further. The OP has his answer.
