I am BEFUDDLED, my step daughter has a 5 gallon aquarium in her room with 2 mollies, a danio and 2 neons in it. We are trying to teach her some responsibility with pets and I was very upset at her for not taking care of her tank so I went in to WC and clean it up a little and to my surprise I see an itty bitty teeny tiny ishy bob baby swimming around in there. I was in disbelief at first then I looked again and counted 3 ishy bob babies in there. I topped off her water and left it alone for now so that I may take a moment to consult with the Pros over at AC to see what's next. Clearly I am inexperienced with fishy daycare, but now that the stork has come like a thief in the night and we have been charged with this unplanned birth I need to ask help from the community (it takes a village, lol.). I don't know what to do with myself, I am peeved at her but thrilled at the same time- holy moly, I feel like a grandparent now, lol.

I think I am going to move her aquarium out into the common area where I can monitor her fish and make sure they start getting proper attention from now on.

Hi and it's great to help teach responsibility so ... let's get you off to on a better footing so you can help her.
First things first. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but most likely the babies will get eaten by either the parents or the danios. If they don't, you have bigger issues because a 5 gallon tank is too small for mollies or danios. Mollies get pretty good sized and they reproduce like crazy. Danios are swimming fish and need a big tank to be happy and healthy. they should also be in schools. the neons also should be in schools.
Here's my best advice for this tank. Return the mollies and danios to the store. It's probably too late to get credit but you can put them in them in the orphan tank and someone will adopt them who has a proper sized tank for them.
Then I'd increase the neons to 6 or 8. It will be a very pretty tank with just the neons.
That tank, because it's so small needs weekly water changes of around 50% to keep the fish healthy. If you have a small siphon for that tank, a water change and vac can be accomplished in around 10 minutes once you get a routine set up. Easy Peasy. Guide her the first few times so she can get the knack for it then let her take care of it after that.

    Good luck!

Well, we had a neighbor that moved out and the neighbor had given the tank and the stock to us for her ( right from the start the poor fish got a raw deal), there is no hope of credit- it would be a surrender. Also she is nine years old and irresponsible even for her age, hence us trying this . She has a smallish room so a larger tank might be an issue. What a garbonculator this is turning out to be, lol. I found it strange that there were only 3 fry in there, so it seems they have been cannibalized to the brink of eradication already. No good deed goes unpunished but it's just a speed bump. Just when I'm almost ready to buy a filter to get my 150 gallon up I get hit with this. This kid better see how much I love her, lol! It seems it is time to kick her input into high gear now. But upon more consideration, I think I am going to surrender the mollies and danio and buy her a few more neons like you suggested and get this aquarium straightened out. This is just the reason that I joined this community- I have a LOT to learn. I hate to see the fish suffer, so it is time to do right by the little buggers Thank You very much for not feeding me to the lions, lol. I appreciate all the help I am getting in my pursuit of knowledge. Yer tops Fishmommie!

It is good you are willing to return fish and fix the stocking. Now the bad news, a 5 gallon isn't really big enough for neons either, they are small fish, but still need room to swim and a 5 gallon doesn't really give them the length they need for swimming. How about you return all the fish, do a good sized water change being sure to clean the gravel, and get a betta.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

Mommy1 has more experience then i do, for certain but I ahve kept 6 neons in a 5 gallon for over a year now and they are doing well. I betta would also be a great idea, as she suggested.

I would not keep a school of neons in anything smaller than ten gallons.

hmm. I had built a 14 inch cubed tank that holds almost 12 gallons. Is it more of an issue for volume or is it a dimensions thing for these little guys? If this tank is suitable I will just transfer the neons to the 14 x 14 x 14 , rehome the danio and the mollies and get a few more neons. The filter and heater we have for the 5 is rated for 10 gallons anyways and worse case I can buy a second aqueon 10 gallon HOB like the first one. I have more gravel for the substrate and we have artificial plants in there already for them to hide in. I don't have the money to buy a whole new setup but if this is acceptable I can swing the money for the second filter. I also have a piece of glass that will be used for the top so I can put the light over it also.

I'd say the choice is yours. My neons do fine in a 5 gallon and I'm aware of several others who also keep neons in a 5 gal. Others feel a larger tank is better and i do not dispute that bigger is more likely better. Fish keeping is not an exact science but based on best practices.
IMO - if you maintain a weekly water change schedule of 50 - 60% they should be fine. But if you have the larger tank and can add more filtration, that would be even better.

Of course it's the OP's choice.
The issue is a little of both length of the tank and volume. 5 gallons of water doesn't give much time for water parameters to go bad even with 6 small fish like neons, 12 gallons gives you a little more leeway. Generally, but not always true, the bigger the volume of water the more stable the environment. With 12 gallons you could easily add 7-8 more neons making the group 9-10 and they would be less stressed. The length of the tank also matters for neons, they can potentially get 1.5 inches and would appreciate a longer tank. I think your 5g is actually longer than the 12g, but the added width might help to compensate for the length.
I would definitely add the additional filtration to the 12 gallon. Watch the parameters carefully and do water changes according to what the tests tell you. Eventually you should be able to get by with 30-50% weekly, but as the tank is maturing, you may need to do more.
