So I had some glass scraps from another project and I decided to throw this tank together just because I could. Here's the tank going together:

And a shot of the stand construction:

I am gonna add some trim to the stand to look like doors, and matching trim on the canopy. I might try to stain the stand. It's either that or black paint.
I might try to do a simple 5.5 or 10 gal sump with the heater and filter in the sump and a simple overflow on the main tank.
Finding plants that will work could be a challenge...

Get this right and you would attract attention in any competition. Personally I'd leave the stand this colour. What are you doing for lighting?

A classic iwagumi would be an interesting challenge but a flooded forest like this one http://www.hraquascape.org/forum/attachments/7_16.jpg could also be done. Get enough light in and you could use riccia mats or Hemianthus Callitrichoides for the foreground, Eleocharis for the background and tight clumps of rotala for accents.

I like the flooded forest. The iwagumi could be interesting too... good food for thought... Thanks!!
Maybe leave the stand this color with slightly darker trim??
As for lighting... I was thinking an LED strip?? Not sure if anything else would even fit in the canopy...

Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me

Just realized I forgot to post the dimensions of this tank. It's 20" long, 3-7/8" tall, and 4-1/2" wide. That comes out to 1.34 gallons with the thickness of the glass figured in...
The stand is 4" tall, and the canopy is 2" tall, making the whole setup 9-7/8" tall...

What you do with the stand is up to you. Personally I like it as it is and would just apply a blank varnish to protect it. If you do want to trim perhaps a very thin black one next to the glass. The square shape of the stand and "hood" as it is now really appeals to me. I like minimalist for these things, the less distraction the better.
Lighting, a led strip is an obvious choice, you might need two though. I have no sense of scale .. what's the length of this and how much clearance is there?
As to filtration, a sump would allow you to remove the heater from the main tank and any co2 injection can also be done there.
