I was planning on going VERY in depth with my leds, adding in several ways to run the leds, several ways to dimm them and other cool things that can be done with leds

Thats what I did. I built a controller using arduino and PCB's for drivers.

If you go through a huge build... It would be awesome to watch your progress

well as you might have found out there are at least 4 ways to run the leds, and i can think of 3 ways to dim them. the arduino is the coolest method because it can do way more things than just dimm the lights (i was thinking of adding a thermocouple to it to monitor the tanks them, and use the leds to heat the water thus saving on electricity a bit....) with a few other awesome idea i have stuck in my head XD....
but running the leds is the wierdest and sometimes hardest part with leds, you can attempt to buy a driver off fleabay and run a few of them, but those cost a good penny, you could just try to run them off plain power, that will cause and issue with voltage spikes if you arent careful. you could use a resistor to limit the current, again issue of spikes. you cna get a buck down voltage regulator but they arent so easy to get/set and they are horribly inefficent, you can use a series of mosfets and npn transistors, to regulate the curret, you can use a simple resistor and zener diode.... and the list will go on from there. all these have pros and cons and all of them i have actually thought about doing. so far im settled on the mosfet+npn but i still have yet to test that lol

Wow! That was a lot of ideas!

Have you heard of meanwell LDD-700h and LDD-1000H drivers? They are 2-52v and controlled by the arduino and 4 of them are attached to a PCB. The drivers are $5 each!

You might want to check this out.... Click Here

That one does temp and a lot of other things or least give you some more ideas

those meanwells are nothing more than my mosfet idea wrapped into a nutshell and sold for a 10000% profit, if i bought the parts in bulk i could have made a driver for about 30 cents on the dollar.... mine can also be controlled by any micro controller or a PWM for that matter, i can also modify mine to do several other things and i wont be stuck with the same current XD.

im starting to think being an ee is a good thing XD
