I also second Borax. 20 mule team borax sprinkled on carpets and soft furniture, left an hour and vacuumed up will do the trick nicely. You can also pop a cheap flea collar in the canister of your vacuum or in the vacuum bag, so they don't escape and infest the place again.
2 10 gallon tanks, 1 20 gallon tank, 1 Fluval Edge, 1 29 gallon tank, and one backyard pond.

    Great article, thanks Aeon!

I'll also have a look for Borax but I've never heard of it.

My mother AND my partner's mother are both vets (wierd, huh?) and they both say to never touch Flea Collars. They're awful things. Frontline and Advantage/Advocate work well. If it's a long-haired dog the fleas will be a lot harder to get rid of, but you have to make the environment as flea-free as possible to stop them coming back once the dog has been de-fleaed. Thorough wash his bedding, vacuum the carpet, couches, etc.

Anyone dealing with fleas needs to research their life cycle, of which there are 4 parts. In addition to dealing with the fleas, the eggs, which are laid in the carpet, need to be dealt with.

Which is why I suggested an IGR. Your vet should sell it.

I also agree about the flea collars. Pretty much useless.

I would not bomb the house due to the fish tanks but you can certainly sprinkle flea killer around the premises. I also agree with Aeon that just treating animals does not work, but where they sleep, the furniture, carpets and even the yard should be treated. I also used Frontline but flea collars are awful and many animals are allergic to them. But then, you don't have animals so that part is not a problem for you.

An exterimator told me about the Mule Team Borax and it worked like a charm. My daughter dragged home two cats that infected my house something awful. I bombed the house about 4 times but got the Borax and vaccummed daily for a week and that was the end of that.
