Well, I figured I'd give an update as to my progress. I decided not to mess with the outside "seal" or tar or whatever it is. I'm sure it wouldn't have been too big of an issue to redo it...but it really doesn't bother me all that much. I did, however, successfully reseal my tank and am happy to report zero leaks after 48 hours of water testing! I allowed the silicone to sit for about a week before I put any water in it. I was a little nervous that I had messed something up along the way, but it looks like all ended up perfectly fine.

Now all I need to do is work on cleaning the metal frame, which is caked with old tape goo, sticky sap-like stuff, and what I've decided is calcium or mineral buildup. I'll try the vinegar soaked towel to start, then we'll go from there.

Very cool. Metaframe tanks are a cool tank. My grampa has like 5 of these things and they have a nestalgia for me looking into them because thats what I grew up with. Glad you could make it work!

I would love to see some pics of the tank once it is all set-up.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Congratz on the successful reseal. As for the frame, have you decided to just shine it up or are you going to paint it?

I put a lot of time into the frame. I really wanted to stick with the nice chrome finish. I found that if I took some really really fine steel wool, got it just slightly damp with some alcohol, and the softest touch imaginable, I could get most of the gunk off without scratching the finish on the metal. Pretty much did the trick. One side still has some junk I can't seem to get off, the other side has some scratches on the I can't decide which side will be the display side yet, but I'm happy with the outcome of the time invested.

I'm in the process of writing up a journal for this tank (starting a personal journal for now and then will post a bunch a once...I tend to ramble). I just need to finalize a stand and I'll begin cycling!

If you can get your hands on a bar of medium Jewelers Rouge, mix it according to the instructions, you can use a buffer and the rouge mixture to remove the gunk and bring on shine like you haven't seen before. When I was a truck driver we used to use rouge on all the metal I.E- aluminum tanks, chrome grilles and bumpers, etc. show car quality shine that will also tone down scratches on the chrome a little.

God I had a bunch of them but with a Slate bottom, Glass kind of held in by a black Tar putty deal sold by them.

Heavy as all get out, and most leaked even when new.
