    Default Green Neon Tetra

I thought I'd share some info about this attractive little fish that we are seeing more of; Paracheirodon Simulans; the Green Neon or false neon.

We may have seen them in our tanks in the past and passed then off as small neons. To the keen eyed observer; you can see that the blue goes all the way to the back fins as opposed to the regular neon's that only goes to the apidose fin. The red is not as bright either.

Some sites list them as not being as easy as the neon but not as hard as the Cardinal. I find it interesting that they are found in the same habitat and company as Cardinals. IME they school tighter than neons. Some sites list them as getting to 1.5" but mine are still 1" after a year and a half. I have also found them to be a tougher little fish than expected. I always thought a big school of them with Ember tetras would look great.

Here's a decent video of them from You-Tube with another little charmer, the Galaxy danio, enjoy!

Lovely, thank you for sharing Steeler -- is it just me or does it look like there's one regular neon amongst that school?

Not uncommon. I think I got two in my school as well.

Nice little fish, does prefer planted tanks and soft water. Unlike neons and cardinals most if not all of these are wild caught. For the keeper willing to provide a good home these are a great alternative to neons and cardinals for the smaller tank. But, even though it's a relatively small fish, I wouldn't keep these in tanks less than 2ft wide.

Mine also eat a lot more algae than I'd expected, they even compete with the bottom dwellers for algae wafers.

Another good video of Green neons, fast becoming one of my favorites. This time with Vietnamese minnows; Tanichthys micagemmae.
