    Default water quality help needed

I have a 37 gal. tank, filtration is a aqua clear 70 and a topfin 40, white pool filter sand and an air pump. Plants java moss. Fish 11 zebra danios.
Tap water pH 7.4-7.6, Ammonia 0ppm

January 26 fishless cycle was completed, added 11 zebra danios Jan 27. I test my water parameters 3 times a week all tests came back the same Ammonia-0ppm Nitrites - 0ppm Nitrates - 5ppm pH - 7.4 - 7.6. I do aprox 80 % water changes twice a week. Then on March 21 my water quality changed Ammonia .25ppm Nitrite - 1ppm Nitrate - 5ppm pH - 8. did a 90% WC. Have now been testing water daily all results are coming back the same Ammonia .25-.50ppm Nitrites .25-.50ppm Nitrates -5ppm pH - 8. I have been doing 80-90% WC every other day since Ammonia and Nitrite levels are increasing by .25ppm daily, Nitrate levels and pH don't change from 5ppm and pH - 8. My API master test kit expires in 2017. Zebra danios do not look to be stressed out as they are constantly swimming at all levels and have nice colour to them. Just concerned as to what would cause Ammonia and Nitrite levels to rise like this and changing the water has no effect and what would cause the change in pH .

Keep in mind that nothing has been added since the zebra danios on Jan 27. Any help, thoughts, sugestions greatly appericiated thanks.

You must have lost your cycle somewhere also the lines. Keep up your excellent schedule of water changes for now. Zebra danios are tough and will likely survive. I suspect that the cause lies with your filter. Have you done anything with it recently? Turned it off more than an hour? Cleaned it? Anything?

Have you tested the water coming from the tap for ammonia?

What water conditioner are you using or do you use well water?

I too would be perplexed. It sounds like you lost your BB but "how" is the question.

Thanks for your quick response, before this happened I had not touched the either filter, however I did wash out the foam pads in both filters yesterday. My filters are only turned off for about 30 min while doing water changes.

Thanks for your response strider, yes I did test the water from my tap and the Ammonia was 0ppm. I use Nutrafin Aqua plus tap water conditioner, I add the conditioner directly to the tank for the full volume of the tank.

+1 to the above post. Your sponges are where most of the good bacteria live as well as your bio-media. Washing out the sponges under tap water will kill them off in a hurry.
Only rinse your filter sponges off in a bucket of used tank water or a bucket of tap water you have added conditioner too to eliminate all the stuff which comes with our city treated water.

Or even if you have used tank water, scrubbing and squeezing the sponges a bit too zealously will remove a lot of the bacteria on the sponges. In that case there is nothing really to do other than wait for them to repopulate.

+ 1 to both strider and madagasca, very good advice.

Thanks for your responses and advice. I did rinse the filter pads in used tank water however I probably did scrub and squeeze the pads out too hard. So I guess I will just keep testing my water daily and be patient and hope for a quick recovery.
