  1. Default "Instant Cycling" question

    0 Not allowed!
I am thinking of placing my order for 30 Cardinal Tetras for my 72g planted project. I have plenty of media in my 55g I have tons of bio media in the rena xp3 as well as a bag of bio media in the AC 70. If Can I just steal the bag from the AC70 and place it in the sump of the 72 just hours prior to the stocking and consider it cycled? Or are there other steps I should take?

My initial thought is that it should be ok but I am looking for a confirmation on that.

I'd say give it a shot. 30 juvenile tetras won't instantly overload the system. Just keep a close eye on your water values for the first 10 days or so.

Thanks talldutchie... That was what I was thinking. The local store has a sale 50% off tropicals and will order them in for me for $2.49 each. Cheaper than I can find them online anywhere.

I don't think you need to do it prior to setting it up.

Just buy the fish, float them in your other tank to keep bag water warm.
set up your other tank (fill with proper temp and dechlorinated water, get filters set up) then add the fish.

presto, you have a cycled tank.

monitor the levels for the next week or two to ensure nothing funky happens. but that is what I did when I moved tanks and everything went swell.

If you have a couple days and there are no other fish in the tank, move the filter media and add a tiny bit of ammonia, maybe 1ppm. Better safe than sorry and if you have order/shipping time there is no reason not to check to be sure.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

That is what I was trying to get at. lol
if set up early, you'll need some way to feed the BB to keep it alive while the fish are en-route.

Ah ok I follow you. Yes the fish will be ordered this friday and received next friday. So I do have a bit of time, perhaps I will put it in next tuesday or wednesday.

That would be the route to go. If I were doing it I'd set it up next Monday or Tuesday to allow time to make sure its cycled but I like to be overly cautious.
    20 gallon tall: empty
29 gallon: moderately planted with 9 bloodfin tetra, 1 german blue ram, 11 glow light tetra and 1 BNP
    10 gallon QT: empty

You can always add the media and then dose with ammonia to build up the bacteria colony while you wait for the fish.
