I don't think cycling killed his fish, Polypterus are very hardy fish, especially a senegalus. These fish can live without a filter or food for ages. Your fish probably was sick. 2 days, with not even more than 3ppm to kill a hardy fish? No.
Your fish was sick dude. Bacterial most likely as amiidae suggested.
For a fish to die from ammonia burning, it would take longer, especially when its a 55 gallon with a few guppies and how big was the senegalus? 4-5 inches? And you would see gasping, red gills etc.
