Thanks mommy1. I am very uncomfortable with the advice I am receiving from the other forum. I really like their fish profiles - this is the first time I have posted to their forum. They want me to buffer my water to satabilize my pH. My pH is stable at 7.2 at each water change. I even have the Seachem in-tank ammonia and pH alert sensors. They are great. I test with the API master kit at each PWC, but these give me a reading anytime I want. Ammonia is always in the safe zone and pH is 7.0 - 7.2 consistently. I don't really see the necessity of adding a buffer. I know the general consensus here is to leave the pH alone, if possible.

    Thoughts?

Everyone here is terrific. Will do the 25% PWC tonight and raise dGH to 5. Will post tomorrow afternoon on any changes. Fortunately, I don't start work tomorrow until 1:30 pm, so I can watch for any improvement and will post tomorrow afternoon on any changes.

I am a member at the other forum as well and slipped over there to read your thread. The advice they gave you about the GH and KH is good and you should buffer the water to help ensure stability in the long run.
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Thanks for checking my posts there as I wasn't sure of what they were advising. They suggested Seachem alkaline buffer and acid buffer used together. Seachem's website has a chart for stabilizing RO/DI water pH using both products. My LFS has both in the powder form - will get them tomorrow morning.

Just a follow up to mommy1's post here. It's called Osmotic Shock and that's why you need to go very slowly when rising GH, KH, and pH. It you proceed to quickly, it will kill your fish. Here's a fairly good article on the subject that I found over at Badman's Tropical Fish.

I would go over to the rainbow fish specialty forum for some info http://rainbow-fish.org/. These guys are really very good, I get a lot of extremely rare fish from them. Hope no one minds the link. It's a very informative site dealing with the bows. Your diet for them lacks algae. They do need a decent amount of algae to stay fit. A kelp flake or spirulina flake works well. I have M. parva, M. trifasciata, M. Fredericki, G doritiyi, Bosemans, Kamakes, C. Alleni Siriwo, and G wannamensis. I breed them all and have populations at 2 years of most. The veggies were the secret to keeping them fit for breeding.

I read about osmotic shock on the Seachem website. Last night I did a 25% PWC, vacuumed the sand and refilled the tank to the level of the AC110 waterfalls (a little above the filter’s waterfall). What a difference in the amount of surface agitation! I also added the suggested airstone to make sure there is enough aeration. I now have really nice water movement at the surface.

I added Seachem Replenish to bring the dGH to 5 and added Seachem Acid Buffer and Alkaline Buffer to set my pH at 7.5. As suggested, I will do bi-weekly PWCs and add 1 dGH at each change to bring the dGH to 10. I will also get the veggie flakes today after work. Until now, I didn't know they were such an important part of the rainbow’s diet.

Water after PWC and this morning is 0/0/5, dGH 5, dKH 2, pH 7.4 and temp 77.2. All tests were done with the API master test kit. I am very pleased with the results.

This morning my rainbows were more active and the 2 who were breathing at the surface are in the top 1/3 of the tank, but not at the surface. I watched them for quite a while this morning and they seem more comfortable than before the PWC and water treatments.

Thanks to all for your help and guidance, especially mommy1 and Taurus. Thanks also for the links – I read the badmans water chemistry info and have bookmarked the rainbowfish site to my favorites. I will also post this to the seriouslyfish forum. They had the same suggestions, but the tone of their forum is a little intimidating for a newbie and not the friendly tone of the AC. I feel terrible that thru my lack of knowledge I lost a beautiful adult male rainbow. I erroneously thought that his difficulty was from my tank cycling method. Next time, I will ask, rather than assume.

I am glad to hear your fish are doing better. Don't beat yourself up to much for making a mistake, we all make them, I still make mistakes sometimes too. Just learn from them and keep researching! One thing I have discovered about this hobby is there is always stuff to learn.

I would consider most of the subject matter covered in this thread in the advanced fish keeper category. I think you've handled the situation very well. You're certainly a better fish keeper now than when you started this thread.
