I'm open to suggestions! I honestly have no idea what we'd use it for (if not as a regular computer).
What do you use yours for?
Keep in mind, none of us are photographers or into photography...and we have internet access issues on the acreage.55 g Goldfish Tank - 5 Fancies, 2 Dojos

I dont know why people get Ipads for photography. That just seems silly to me.
The ipad can be used for taking notes since its more portable, while a laptop can be used for heavier work.

Okay...we could do that. The issue there would be the Apple/PC issue. If I get him a laptop it would be a PC...probably through the University's New Student purchase program (they bundle it up...so it's just easier to get started with whatever he needs school-wise). None of us are Apple fans.
But maybe that's not not the issue anymore than it once was? These are the kind of details I'm not up on.
I do know, last semester...when my class had video presentations...that the Apple kids were having issues uploading and projecting their videos...even IT was surprised. The PC kids (the vast majority) were fine.55 g Goldfish Tank - 5 Fancies, 2 Dojos

I had to laugh...just found this list:
http://ipad.about.com/od/iPad_Guide/...-Best-Uses.htm
None of those suggestions are useful to any of us. Our cell phones barely work at home...although I found a couple of doorways that I can get 3 bars in...and my son (same phone)...found a similar hotspot at the kitchen table. It works well as long as we don't move and hold absolutely still. We don't get all the bars...ever.
I'm not about to pay for iffy service for yet another device. And our cell phones are more practical for we're in the city...no one is going to lug a tablet around in addition to, or in lieu of.
Okay...I think I've almost exhausted this subject...

I've had laptops ever since I joined this company 15 years ago. 2 years ago I won an ipod. I looked at it. It's too big to conveniently carry with me. The onscreen keyboard doesn't come close to the speed and accuracy I get on a laptop. The screen size is big enoug to use the internet. It makes a lovely photo frame.
IMO the device is great for consuming media (look at websites, videos, whatever) but lousy for creating content (writing, doing serious photo or video editing).
If I'd won an ipod I'd ebay it and put the proceeds towards this:

I know that T-series. Fast enough and as nearly indestructable as any laptop is. Stick a modern samsung SSD in it and it will be extremely fast.My 33 gallon/125 liter tank. My photography on flickr.

Not an apple fan but their tablets and music players are reasonably well made if not inherently as functional than a more open platform. If going with a laptop I would definitely go with a pc.
