    Default Substrate idea... Néed help

    I am looking at doing something like a sunken effect about 2.5 to 3" higher than the lower substrate. Will I run into any issues if that substrate is 4 to 5 inches deep? I was thinking of using sts and pool sand in the 2 areas.

    You could get away with substrate that deep if using pfs. I would be sure to stir it frequently to prevent anaerobic spots. Adding burrowing invertebrates like MTS may help.

    Would it be beneficial to fill the lower area with large stones as opposed to all sand?

    couldnt you just add a shelf inside the deeper part to make it look deep but only be 2/3" deep?

    I wonder if i plant one of my tiger barbs would the demon seed grow to a full tree?
