recommended wc ammount with filter clean
As title sais ive read up that a wc such as 20-40% should not be done when the filters get cleaned.
Is there any ammount which is safe or should it just not be done.100 gallon dirt planted tank

I have always done 50 to 75% weekly water changes, even when cleaning the filter. I have never noticed any type of change in the water parameters from done that. Your water changes should not have any impact on your filter, even when you clean it.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Same for me. I always do 50% changes even when I clean the filters and never have any issues. A well seasoned tank should be able to handle a good filter cleaning without trouble.
If it's called tourist season why can't I shoot them?
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

Minimum water change I ever do is 50% generally I do mostly 75%. I have a few times left the siphon in too long and ended up with a 90% it has never had a negative impact on my fish
My therapist says I need a bigger tank . . . . .

Yikes, I've done that too on occasion Scotti.
Luckily there is little to no beneficial bacteria in the water.

The ideal WC amount depends on the tank, how mature the filter is, plants if any. Stocking density.
You need to get a feel for it. Measuring nitrates before and after will help a bit.My 33 gallon/125 liter tank. My photography on flickr.

The filters have been matured for around 2 years well two have the other less than a year.
Ive just been reading around and apparently filter changes should not be the same time as a pwc.100 gallon dirt planted tank

Fillter changes and filter cleaning are two different things
There still would not be any benfit to changing filter media with or without a water change, the two will not effect each other. IMO, you should never change your filter media until it starts to fall apart, reguardless of when you will do a water change.I have filter media going on 4 years old and it still works very well. Can't see me changing it in the next 4 years either. Giving the media a gentle squeeze and rinse is best done in a bucket of tank water. If you're at it might as well do a water change.
