Hello all. I just have a quick question for right now. Please keep in mind, I am a complete dufus when it comes to technical stuff.

I finally got my API water test kits out to use. So far I have only tested the tap. I will have to rest a little before I can do the 5g.

Anywho, my tap water tests at GH 30 drops,,,KH 20 drops. Is that bad?? Sounds like a lot to me. PH was 7.0, ammonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate 0. High range PH was 7.4.

Also, is just rinsing the test tubes a couple times in water before storing, or should they have a vinegar bath?

Also, got the 20g put back together. Will let it set a couple days before filling. Wish me luck.

    1. Why are you letting the tank sit for the couple of days? Are you looking to do a fishless cycle? There is no need to let a tank sit - you can fill it, run everything to make sure everything works properly for like a day (filter, heater, etc.) and then begin cycling
    with ammonia
    2. Your pH seems fine - your water parameters are supposed to be all 0 - you haven't added any ammonia yet to grow bacteria.
    3. rinsing test tubes in water is fine before storing - they don't need to be cleaned with vinegar
46 gal fw tank with black skirt tetras, neon tetras, spotted corys, cherry barbs, otoclinus, snails & 4 amano shrimp - plastic & live plants
    5 gal QT
Remember: Our job is to take care of the water our fish live in
