Since it will be the only fish in the tank you might get away with a slightly larger cat fish around 6 inches at the very most 7... But you need a less active cat fish that large. You wouldnt like rapheal cats as they are very nocturnal. Besides barbles you said, what other features are u looking for?

A single hoplo should be ok then.
Remember, if you take all the fish out the tank then you will need to dose with ammonia so you dont lose all the good bacteria in the filters.
Also watch for an ammonia spike when you add a catfish as their bioload is noticably more substantial than neons. My therapist says I need a bigger tank . . . . .

That Ph it's probably reasonably soft as well. ..
Hmm... no sucker mouth... that limits the options a lot. A school of smaller cories is always nice,

sadly, if you don't want either of those two, you don't have the space for a "catfish"
all other catfish, are pretty much what you can find in lakes that get well over a foot long.
so add another 0 to that 30gallons, and you'll have real options. lol.
but you'd be pleasantly surprised with cory's. they are fun little things to watch

What is that speckled or pokeadoted catfish?? I don't know much about it's requirments, but I do know it is best to keep it either alone or with really large fish. It will eat anything it can get into it's mouth. Neat looking too.

Upside down can get from 3-4 at max, but make sure it isn't the featherfin before you buy. I myself am planning on getting 3 of these for my 50g, or 55g because everyone says I should get 48 inches for loaches.

^this is true. Im basing my suggestion off of what is more commonly available in lfs's, or at least what i see in my area.
there are plenty of catfish to chose from that would work in a 30gallon, as you stated, but most stores keep the reg: red tailed, pictus, cory cat, pleco, syno UD, featherfin UD. I haven't seen anything outside of that in a store.
So good point in calling that out
