So sorry to hear this. Some lessons are learned the hard way. Don't worry, we've all been there. You'll be better for this experience.

What horrible advice by the store! LFS advice is generally pretty bad but this is unacceptable. I wouldn't shop there any longer if I were you.
Male and female bettas should never be kept together. Some people try but it's just not a good idea.
A dwarf gourami and a betta can work but it's not commonly done and the conditions must be right (large tank, lots of places and hiding spaces, etc.).
Two male dwarf gourami should not be kept together.
