Truthfully Id really like to push it and try out Serpae, they offer such awesome contrast to the wood and Vals...it would be worth the risk if it worked. I also have the means to remove the tetras should things not work out. I am doing some additional research from others who have had success with Serpae and Discus.
I will be picking my sand up hopefully the end of the week, then the tank will be flooded by next weekend. I will possibly plant over the weekend as well...fish to be added soon after with seeded media of course.150G SA Cichlids|100G Planted Community|50G Reef|20G Tanganyikan|10G Divided Bettas|10G Nano Fish

Here's one more fish to pitch to you. They are pretty new and seem to be gaining popularity. They are so new they don't have a scentific name yet; just HY511. They llok alot like Rosy Tetras with more white. Just a suggestion.

Those tetras are pretty...I was however looking for something a bit more bold in color.
The tank has now been filled...the wood naturally floats Ive got some weighed down with rock and the 2 taller pieces are kind of wedged down with the rim of the tank. Water is cloudy due to the sand. I will say that HTH pool filter sand from Ace is actually very nice...very comparable to Caribsea Torpedo beach sand. And for $13 for 50lbs versus $20 for 20lbs I think I will be using this stuff a lot in the near future

Red Spotted Green or any Tefe would be great... I have a new love in the tetra world, the Ruby Tetra...

... also where are you getting your wilds from? I know a few guys that are direct importers here in Fl and they are great at getting pairs.
Also I have always loved Lemon Tetras and Penguin Tetra's in discus displays.FW: 1 45gal, 1 40gal, 3 10gal, 3 30gal all community tanks of different species

The Ruby tetra is indeed a beautiful fish but they stay at or under 1'" so they might provide a snack for the Discus.
+ 1 to Lemons and Penquins. If you like Lemons you might consider this fish if you can find it (still pretty new).

Very nice set-up. The wood looks so natural. How long did that configuration take you MCHRkiller?
I know embers are small and my Rams some times followed them but they stayed nimble and out of reach. A tank of Discus, Embers (the orange ones not the white), and some Cories would be neat to see. Mind you the Embers would need some plants to have as protection. I don't think I've ever seen a Discus eat another fish. But then again mine were smallish and by themselves back in the day.Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

Those H.heliacus are incredible...now I am sure finding them will pose a challenge. I also really like the Ruby tetras. Great suggestions, thanks! I am not yet sure where I will source my fish...most likely from Snookn21 on aquabid...however I may also see what Jeff Rapps has when I am ready to buy. If you have any suggestions on a supplier please send them my way.
It took me about 15mins to place the wood...I was lucky enough to send my tank specs and what I wanted to a guy Ive bought wood from many times on Plantedtank.net and he hooked me up with a selection of awesome pieces. I just picked out some which I hoped would work and wound up with the present scape. This 56G column is surprisingly super easy to scape...most cubey tanks are a PITA but the extra length on this one makes the difference.150G SA Cichlids|100G Planted Community|50G Reef|20G Tanganyikan|10G Divided Bettas|10G Nano Fish

15 minutes and it looks great, that is the Jenn Zenn in action. Throw everything in and it looks great and makes me jealous. I am looking forward to watching this tank develop.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Smaug, you're here a lot just to say it's a waste of your time, poor baby, I bet you don't even know how big a loser you are, and how much we laugh at you and your foolish attempt to give your life meaning. Quit drinking, get a life, go take care of your family, grow up!

Sadly no updates to report; the wood has still not sunk. I dont want to screw it down to tiles so I am waiting ever so patiently.

I am also using the time to really consider what I want my "tank future" to be...there are species I have kept in the past which I would really like to re-keep. Some of my current species I am kind of done with for awhile. I have considered selling all of my present stock at the old house except for my male Rotkeil and O. Still unsure of this but it has definitely been a thought on the front of my mind the last week or so.
I am also considering what tank scapes and species I would like to have. I am oddly excited about a tank the SO has requested...which is a goldfish aquarium. Somewhat of an oddity for me...however I have been eyeballing a specific ADG goldfish layout and I have grown to really wish to recreate my own version on a slightly smaller scale. Here is the tank which has sucked me in:
