  1. Default Reducing filter flow.

I have a betta in a 5.5 gal tank with a Whisper HOB filter. I think the flow is a bit much for him and I'm trying to come up with a way to reduce it. Any ideas?

You could try one of these:

    It worked great for me
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I used a spare piece of filter media to block and divert the current from the filter in Arrow's tank. He's sleeping on/under/in front of the thing now

I've never used a HOB but I was thinking about this. Would it also work to fix a piece of coarse-grain sponge under the flow? You could thread a piece or two or wire through it and hook it on the back of the tank to hold it in place. The sponge would spread and disperse the water being dumped back in the tank.

For now I am using a piece of foam filter block cut down and slit to fit over the outflow. It works great but isn't very attractive...I am going to try the same thing with a black Fluval prefilter when I have time to pick one up.

That's exactly what I would have suggested. They do make a coarse black sponge that perhaps would not be so obvious.

I switched to a small internal for both my 5 gal betta tanks. It is called a Zoomed turtle clean 318. It is quite small but effective. Adjustable flow, works great, even has two small box compartments for carbon or other media. They cost 20 bucks on amazon. I love em. I do like HOB filters for their ease of cleaning but I wanted my betta tanks to have minimal stuff on and around them.

Thank you for asking this exact question. I have the same setup as you and the same problem. This idea sounds great. I am sure Robbie will appreciate it. The current is so strong, he can't swim in most of the tank.
Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without
